Conditional import ?

I wonder wether (in this version or a newer one) there is a possibility to perform a conditional import ?

I am thinking about selecting a drive/map and then let lightroom only import images that have a specific size or specific string in the name of the file (or other parameters).

WHY ?

I have a photo library of about 300.000 images ( well 20 yeears of photograhping takes it's toll 😉 and tagged the better ones in this 'heap' 😉

I would like to setup a specific catalogue that only imports those better ones so that I have a smaller more reactive library for my nicer ones and still have a library for everything'

If there are other workarounds with which I could come to the same results I am open for suggestions ... because I intend to continue photographing for some more years 😉

Smaller does not imply better, or faster. Generally, smaller does not fix speed problems (except backup time). So what problem are you really trying to solve?

That's why I want to only include the better ones in one library. Exporting them to 1 folder would deliver a folder with 30K of images... think that may be too much for a folder (on the pc) to handle ...

@Ian Lyons : I can indeed filter out the images like you say. Will try and see how that goes . Could maybe work. Let me try this 😉

Generally, catalog size does not affect performance. But please be specific, what actions in Lightroom are slow?

Also, please note the plan to export as catalog photos such that now you have two catalogs -- the two catalogs do not speak to one another, edits and metadata applied in one catalog will not appear in the other catalog. This places the responsibility on YOU to make sure that you keep the two catalogs synchronized MANUALLY, or then you have two different versions of your edits and metadata in the two different catalogs, which in my opinion is not a good thing to have.

Importing new shots (which are already on he pc) goes really slow or does not function. It does not need to be an issue of the lightroom and may also have to do with the ram of the pc ( Apple Imac, 8 ram). So that's why I split these up (by years for now). All my images are also carrying several keywords which are added via a hierarchical keyword tree (inside lightroom) so this may also eat extra memory ...

Always nicer however if I can have all of them in 1 environment so that I can make a full selection if looking for images of a specific species ( I am into nature photography) instead of having to open 2 environments and perform the search twice .

So give us the details. What part of importing is slow? Is it the wait to see the imported photo (actually the thumbnails) in the Import dialog box? Or is it the speed of the importing after you click on the Import button? Or something else?

It is the actual import (after the import dialog box) , when hitting import it sometimes (often) makes lightroom crash. I have the impression this happens more frequently when there is still a filter active (from the previous selections). It also does run smoother if I already import the images on a drive in the pc and then import from there (rather then directly import from the memory card).

When out in the field I often com back with 500 to 1.000 shots. And before you aks , yes I do optimize the catalogue from time to time too 😉

The catalogue holds images of over 15 years with various camera's all in jpg format. But do not expect that to be a problem.

I can't imagine a mechanism that would cause this where a smaller catalog would fix the problem.

Please let us know the exact version NUMBER of your Lightroom, and the exact version NUMBER of your operating system. Do not use words like "latest" or "up-to-date".

You are WAY BEHIND on the LR version. It is now at 8.01 and OS X Mojave I think is at 10.14.1 or 10.14.2

Yes this is the problem. There were a bunch of bad import bugs in 7.0 if I remember correctly. Also Shoot me is correct that you should be at 10.14.2 for Mojave. 10.14 had some issues with Lightroom Classic in severely slowing down some operations.

That's the version I receive from our company 😉 So have to work with that one I fear. Will see about the Mojave for update ...hope that resolves

They must do this through some creative cloud for teams subscription right? I don't think you can limit apps in there to only older versions but only to specific apps being installed so if you have access to Classic you should have access to the latest version. You should have the creative cloud app installed on your machine (look for a little cloud in the menu bar) and in there you should be able to upgrade Lightroom Classic to the latest version. If you don't have the cloud icon, just type creative cloud in the magnifying glass in the menu bar.

It is possible that the company firewall prevents downloads other than "approved" software. In which case, a discussion with the IT manager might (or might not) help.

Assuming you can filter on the photos you want to include in a new catalog then you can use the 'Export as Catalog' feature to achieve what you're after.

For example, the photos you want to include in a new catalog might be rated at 5 star. In this case you would filter in current catalog to show only 5 star photos, select these photos, then use Export as Catalog. Only the selected photos will be included in the new catalog.

Retired Info Tech Security Manager. In a company the Info Tech staff can most certainly prevent users from accomplishing any updates, upgrades, bug fixes, installs, etc to a company computer. That's in fact basic 101 of computer security in a business LAN.

All software buys must be approved, tested, certified, budgeted, approved They must work on the system, they must allow for security concerns, They must allow for security updates via I.T. staff, etc etc etc. Even simple bug fixes like Windows updates get tested before implementing.

You never ever allow the fellow employees do do any of this on the company's computers. That would be just begging for issues.

Now, as for this particular issue, Not sure on Adobe's pricing and so forth for enterprise installs, but they probably allow updates for the CC products at no cost just like they do for us normal personal user customers. So the OP needs to put in a request (yes, probably already did) to the I.T. staff for the updates. They probably have a formal procedure in place for this, check company policy.

If you are running into issues with the I.T. staff treating your request properly, try sending it up the management chain of command, get a supervisor/manager to escalate it up, perhaps a manager can bring up the issue in a staff meeting (with the boss, the under bosses, the comptroller, public affairs, I.T. manager present) point is to get the I.T> manager involved at higher level. Use the system. be nice, be respective, make good points as to why they need to move forward.

Now, as a retired I.T. I wonder why your staff is not already resolving this, they are supposed to keep software up to date, not only for Information Security issues (I do not immediately recall any for with Creative Cloud), but also for fixes where software is broken, they might not be so aggressive for software improvements not involving INFO SEC however.

How is the I.T. staff at your job staffed? Is it in house? Is it company employees or a contractor. If its a outside contractor, who manages the contract in house?

Well I update the version of Mojave and tried to import +12.000 images in an exisiting library , the programm was aborted and gave a me a very large error dump... You cann't hold it against thme that they do not deliver enough details 😉
