delete xmp files

Hi

I'm busy doing some cleanup of my lightroom catalog.

I have a few folders where I still have some NEF-files
I would like to convert them to DNG files.

When I do this, I see the XMP-files are still in the folder, the NEF-files are replaced by DNG.

Can I remove the XMP-files, as normally the XMP data is stored into the DNG.

Is it safe, or do I have to keep them.

I know, it's just a kb, it's only to have clean folders.

thanks for the help

enjoy the day

I would think it is as as you say the edits you have made to the NEF's that are stored in the XMP files has now been included inside the DNG files.

Simple way to tell is to Delete one of them and then open LR and go to that DNG file and look to see if the edits are still there.

If you convert the original files to DNG using the default conversion settings the original file and XMP sidecar will remain on your hard disk / SSD. However, both the original file and the XMP sidecar are redundant. Some users choose to leave both in place as backups, although Lr no longer accesses them and storing a backup alongside the DNG isn't really a backup. Best to configure the DNG conversion dialog to delete the original file. This will also result in the XMP sidecar being deleted.
