It won't work with Linux (except perhaps using WINE), but your existing license will already work with Mac.

No Linux, it's a marginal market. And generally, people who switch from one platform to another because they believe it's "better" are in for a disappointment. Getting a new computer may sometimes help, though

If you have specific problems I'm sure there are people here who can help you with that.

An older thread, but I would love to get lightroom running in Linux (Mint). I am currently running it in a virtual machine, but that is basically the same as running it in Windows 7, and I really don't like Windows.

Maybe I just need to buck up and buy a Mac, but that brings problems of its own...

I've been running Lightroom 5 on my Linux workstation for many months.  Lightroom is one of the few non-native applications I use, so virtualization was the way to go.

For my setup, I'm virtuailzing Lightroom 5 in VMware Workstation 10 running on Scientific Linux 6.4 (RHEL 6 clone).   You can try VMware Player, which is free, if you need no more than one VM running at a time.  My Lightroom catalog & previews are stored locally in the Windows VM with source photos stored on the VMware shared host folder.  For sanity, I frequently run automated Robocopy (a Windows version of Rsync) scripts which backup my Lightroom catalog and preview directories directly to my host filesystem, and are included in my main backup routine.

Overall performance of virtualized Lightroom is quite good and offers near native speed, though there is always a slight performance hit with virtuization.  I'll often run Lightroom multi-monitor, but that can be a bit finicky if you switch between Lightroom modules often.

Having said all that, Linux-based operating systems are superb for many things, but if you're a professional photographer or otherwise use Lightroom for hours each day, stick with a native Windows or Mac platform.

This is something I'm attempting to do as well. Except when I launch the Lightroom installer in Wine I get prompted that it will only work in Windows 7. How did you successfully install Lightroom with Wine?

I made no mention of WINE.  I'm running Lightroom on Windows 7, which is virtualized in VMware Workstation 10, now running on Scientific Linux 6.5.

I'm skeptical of graphical performance of WINE, VirtualBox, or KVM, but would have to image that VirtualBox would be second-best to VMware's offering.

Mr RAW, do you have display calibration working in this setup? Just curious as it is possible to use display calibration in Linux apps, but if am dubious about a virtualized environment.

Other than ICC profiles, I haven't messed with any other color calibration.  I'm no professional photographer, but my last 40" acrylic enlargement was spot on.

Also, since you can easily pass-though USB devices, I can't image you'd have any difficulty using more advanced hardware color calibration devices.

That IS linux kernel support right there!!

Old post, so for the sake of ALL FAIRNESS to linux,  I would like to add my share.

Maybe back in 2012 the opinions expressed in this thread might've been somewhat correct.

I've been a linux user and enthusiast  since 1998.

They've always  been, (and still are) options available.

See here:

And since these other two threads were locked a few years ago, I would like to take this  great opportunity to merge  them in here with my reply,  so  that the 500K ++  linux croud that was previously voiced down is not  left out:
