Cannot download to Lightroom from a Sony A6300 camera.

What Lightroom version?  You need v6.5 or higher to import from the a6300. Cameras supported by Camera Raw

If you have an older version, you have two options-

1. Upgrade Lightroom

2. Convert the sony files to DNG using Adobe's free "DNG Converter" program, then import the DNGs to Lightroom.

What do you mean, can't download. Files aren't recognized or the camera itself isn't recognized? You need at least Lightroom 6.5 or Lightroom CC 2015.5 in order for Lightroom to recognize the raw files from your camera.

Thanks Jim I think I am all sorted. Sorry, I am not very computer literate but perserverance paid off. Once again thanks for your guidance which initially pointed me in the right direction.
