Edit in Adobe Photoshop 2024 not working

Community Beginner ,
Aug 22, 2024 Aug 22, 2024

I get the prompt that Lightroom and Photoshop are having issues connecting. I've tried resetting the preferences of Lightroom Classic and photoshop. As well I have re-installed them both through the Creative Cloud App.

Still doesn't work 😞

Any other ideas out there?

Lightroom Classic version: 13.5 [ 202408062022-6258095b ]

When you reinstalled them, did you install Photoshop first? That is often important in this case. It may also help if you show a screenshot, or state word by word what that 'prompt' says.

After reinstalling Photoshop 2024, do you see Photoshop 2024 listed in the drop down of Lightroom Classic Preference?

(Please check Lightroom Preferences->External Editing and check for the dropdown if Photoshop 2024 is listed there or not.) If you are not seeing Photoshop 2024 listed, please open Photoshop 2024 seperately and close it. Now recheck if your preference is showing PS 2024 and then try your workflow.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately the problem persists. Photshop was listed in the preferences.

@michaelp6489266

1) After re-installing Photoshop 2024, did you try to uninstall Photoshop Beta ? (If yes, then you may have to reinstall Photoshop 2024 again)

If the issue still persists, could you please try out the below mentioned steps:

a) Can you check if the same error is observed with Photoshop 2023 version as well?

b) Do you have any external hard disk connected?

Does the issue happen with images present on local too?

I updated Photoshop on my Macbook to the offered update.  It was the Beta version and I got the error trying to edit CMD-E.  I updated the Preferences External Editing to the Beta version and it worked fine.  Thanks!

In extreme cases, when uninstalling PS, some members need to remove the existing preference file. As I remember it, that is an option, and the default is to keep the preferences file. So when you uninstalled PS, did you remove the preferences file (the PS preferences file)

Try this (from a completely unrelated post involving PS Beta option)

  1. Close LrC
  2. Bring up PS
  3. Open LrC, in LrC /Preferences/External Editing/ double check the PS is shown
  4. Try your Edit

Hi @Cosmin-Marian346619322nv0 ,

1) Can you share your system info and also a screenshot of Preferences -> External Editing tab?

2) Are you seeing any error when you try to launch PS from LR?

At any point of time had you installed/uninstalled PS beta? This issue can occur if thats the case.

Please try to uninstall PS 2024 and reinstall it. Open it once manually after reinstalling, and then try the qorkflow through LRC

Never had the PS beta installed.

i tried unistalling/reinstalling photoshop, unistalling all apps, but keeping preferences, unistalling all apps without keeping preferences, i tried all that i could find online, nothing helped.
Also, need to mention that it is still working on version 12.4 but not on anything that was released after.

1) Do you have any external hard disk connected during this process? If yes, can you please disconnect the hard disk and retry the uninstall-reinstall process?

2) Can you install PS 2023 once and check if Edit in PS 2023 works fine from Lightroom? If it works fine, you can try to install PS 2024 again and check once

Right, so guys I found a workaround. For now, I know it works on macOS, I have no idea regarding windows as I do not have a windows machine, but feel free to try.

So, what I did was to go to Preferences>External Editing and just adding Photoshop again as the second external editing choice. It didn't work the first time, as Lightroom said that Photoshop is already selected as the default external editing source, but the second time I tried it let me set it as the second external editing choice.

It is either this, or in my case, downgrade to 12.4, that was the last version in which I could start Photoshop from Lightroom.

I have attached a screenshot with my External Editing tab to better understand.

I just wish adobe could fix this and I wouldn't have to find workarounds, but until then, this is the best shot.Screenshot 2024-09-12 at 16.10.00.png

Thank you!

This worked, after weeks of trying to figure it out, setting PS as the secondary editing preference seemed to help with this newest version.  I'm actually talking to a support rep now and they're saying there is no known issue - which is weird as this seems to be ongoing for quite some time according to the community forum.  Luckily I found this as I was waiting for them to respond.  Hopefully they will fix this immediately as it is an issue.

That sounds a lot like the preference files for both LrC and PS are fouled up. As such a Uninstall (of both LrC and PS), a preference removal (both LrC and PS), then a new install (with PS first) may be called for, and may fix (or not)

  1. First use the Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop App (ACCDA) to Unistall PS
  2. When you are presented with the option to remove the preference file, do so
  3. Then Uninstall LrC.
  4. Unless an option has been added in the ACCDA, there is no option to remove the LrC preference file during the Uninstall
  5. Manually remove the LrC preference file (link below)
  6. Next use ACCDA to install PS (PS must be installed first for some reason)
  7. Then install LrC
  8. Cross fingers, and hope

That would be great if any of that worked, but after attempting all of this over the past week or two plus details from Adobe Support, the only thing that worked for me was Cosmin's findings, which were either 1: Set PS as a secondary edit preference in Lightroom or 2: Downgrade to version 13.4.

Glad I could help, I realised that while in a hurry I said Lightroom version 12.4, when I lent to say 13.4, so sorry for that.
