Embedded & Sidecar import previews question

Would having the import previews for lightroom classic set to embedded and sidecar hinder the rendering of previews as opposed to standard previews?  Thank you, please e-mail me at [Private info removed - moderator]

It depends on the camera. Most Canon and Nikon DSLRs produce full size embedded jpeg previews. These are ideal for instant culling in Library Loupe. My FujiFilm camera produces previews smaller than the original raw file resolution. In that case Lr Classic will generate standard previews on the fly unless I shoot Raw+Jpeg and import the pairs. There is a preference setting to generate previews during idle time.

My own method is to finish culling the entire import batch using the “Embedded & Sidecar” method. I then delete the rejects and generate standard or 1:1 previews for the picks. It is at this point I intend to start editing the keepers and I don’t want an embedded preview to be confusing, as it would usually look quite different straight off the camera, compared with a developed photo. The embedded previews always display an overlay and the filmstrip thumbnails have an icon (top-left) to distinguish them from Lr previews.

This new workflow is really designed for wedding, event, sports or press shooters, with tight deadlines. So if you are not concerned with speed of initial culling you could wait for standard or 1:1 previews to be generated during import in the usual manner.

I am still having problems importing into lightroom classic. The images are not rendering in the preview pane.  They will load very quickly in lightroom CC.  What do you think may be the cause?  Thank you.

Are you importing from camera or card reader? Ensure the destination panel is open and you are copying to a folder with read/write permissions.
