enhanced, denoise keyword created in an unwanted hierarchy

TLDR; When selecting "automatically add keywords to enhanced images", Lightroom created an "Enhanced" keyword hierarchy in an unexpected location of my keyword list.

Details follow-

I just started using denoise (great results and reasonable speed using amd 3900x and nvidea 4700) and checked the file handling preference "automatically add keywords to enhanced images". An "Enhanced, Denoise" keyword hierarchy was duly added to the denoised images. However, this hierarchy was automatically created inside an unexpected part of my existing keyword hierarchy (they happened to be created under "Luxor"). From that point on, whenever I denoised any image, including ones that didn't have the "Luxor" keyword, they were  asigned the same "Enh, Den" hierarchy under "Luxor". So whenever I filtered on Luxor, I would see all my enhanced images - not desirable for images from "California". Interestingly enough, a "." and a "*" also appeared next to the Luxor name in the keyword hierarchy.

Fairly easy to fix once I found the cause but confusing. Perhaps more experienced than I would expect this... However, the addition of characters to the existing Luxor keyword doesn't seem correct.

"Fairly easy to fix once I found the cause"

You didn't say what you did to fix this, but for future readers, it sounds like you had set the option Put New Keywords Inside This Keyword for the Luxor keyword. Thus, the Enhance command added its keywords under Luxor.

Interestingly enough, a "." and a "*" also appeared next to the Luxor name in the keyword hierarchy.

In the Keyword List panel, a "•" to the right of a keyword indicates new keywords will placed inside that keyword:

In the Keywording panel, when you have multiple photos selected, a "*" is appended to keywords that are assigned to some but not all of the selected photos. In your example, you had probably filtered by the keyword Luxor, and only some of those photos had the Luxor > Enhanced keyword assigned:
