How to Control Sorting of Adobe Web Galleries

Engaged ,
Dec 23, 2022 Dec 23, 2022

I like to create web galleries from Lightroom collections.  The process is simple and easy to create the galleries by making the Lightroom collection public.  The problem I have is that I don't know how to sort the galleries once they are on the web.  Changing the order of the Lightroom collection doesn't affect the order of the web gallery at all.  Does anyone know how to sort these web galleries.  Here's an example web gallery at https://lightroom.adobe.com/shares/0f4b5032f2834cfdbcabb1e7b31a2c16.  The picture below is a the same photos in the original Lightroom collection.

The answer here is correct.  LRC controls the sort order and synch will reoderer any public web collections.   (eventually).   But, be aware, that if you use the "View on Web" feature within the LRC Collections menu that the Web Collection does not honor the LRC custom sequence!  Rather, it displays the collection in date sequence by default.   As the author says, the link to the public collections will honor the custom sort.

Probably from within the gallery, not from within LrC.

and from that, see:

Thanks for the response. These articles refer to creating a page using the
Lightroom Classic "Web" module. I'm not using the Web module. I'm just
taking a Lightroom collection and making it public. This creates a web
page, with a unique URL, using the collection. My problem is I don't see a
way to sort the photos on the web page. Changing the order of the
collection in Lightroom Classic has no affect on the web page.

It seems to be a confusing mess.

Viewers of a shared Lightroom Cloud album don't have any control over the ordering.

According to this post, LR Web always displays photos in Custom Order (initially set from the current order when you synced the LR Classic collection).  Changes to custom order in LR Classic, LR Web, or LR Desktop will be synced to the shared album, but changes in ordering mode (e.g. from Custom to Capture Date or Reverse Order) won't be synced.

If you want to reset the custom ordering to, say, Capture Date, go to LR Web, select the shared album, click the sorting button:

This just sets the current custom order to whatever ordering you select, it doesn't keep the album sorted in that order when you add new photos.

Hi John,

Thanks for responding. That information is definitely confusing and not at
all correct based on my experience. It doesn't matter what order the LR
collection is. When I make it public and look at it on the web, the order
of pics is completely random. When I add photos to the collection in
Lightroom it seems to always add them to the end of the web gallery.

Right, that's what's described in that post: "Subsequently adding new images to the album will always show them at the end of the album". When you add photos to a LRC collection, they are added to the end of the current custom ordering of that collection, and that custom ordering gets synced to LR Web.

Overall, that post matches my own testing. Let's figure out what's going on in your case.  Try this:

1. In LR Classic, make a collection with four photos.

2. Do View > Sort > Custom, and adjust the order to something different than that displayed.

3. Sync the collection to LR Cloud.

4. Do Make Public in the upper-right of LRC and click the link.

5. Observe the order of the shared album in the web browser. When I do it, it matches the order displayed in LR :

6. Change the custom ordering in the LRC collection and wait for the changes to sync.

7. Click the shared link and refresh the browser. It sometimes takes a couple minutes for the changed order to show up:

John, looks like that works.  However, on a large collection changing the sort doesn't happen right away.  We have to be patient.  I refreshed the web page and eventually you see the change in sorting.  Anyway, thanks for your help.
