Is it okay to delete cache files on external hard drive?

I use an external hard drive for all my photos when I work in Lightroom Classic. Over the last couple of years, I see a buildup of cache files on the external hard drive. I wonder if it is safe for me to delete the cache files there? If yes, then how to do it safely.

The location and size of cache files is controlled in Lightroom Preferences > Performance tab, you can also purge the file at any time and they will be rebuilt. See the screen capture.

I believe it would be best if they are located on the same drive where the Lightroom application is installed, it's ok to have your  original image files, Catalog file and Previews on an external drive.
