Is there something wrong with LR 10.1 previews and grids?

So this is the thing, bare in mind that none of this happened with v9.4, these are totally new issues I'm having after updating to v10.0 and v10.1 ..

1- On the Develop mode, grain size looks awful when you apply a preset with some of it until you zoom the image to 100%, then the grain gets fixed and it looks "good" until you go to a new image and then go back to the previous (the one fixed) and grain goes back to the wrong size on the image.

2- On Develop and Library modes, thumbnails are not keeping the correct coloring, on the Library after some coloring on the Develop mode, if you click on the grid and look at the images at a certain size it looks different than if you look at the same image at another grid size. So the coloring could change depending on the size of the grid thumbnails.

3- On the Develop mode, after applying the editing and then move to the next image, the applied coloring goes away in the thumbnail after you click on another image ( it could happen right after or after 2 or 3 images) it just doesn't keep the coloring so you can't really see how everything is looking because the thumbnails are not a true representation of the edited image.

Now.. as I said.. keep in mind that none of this was happening with v9.4 .. it started with v10.. images were imported using standard preview size.. and then Smart Previews were created.

I think this will illustrate better the issue..   On the left side, the thumbnail is selected and the image color is correct.. on the right image another thumbnail is selected and the preview thumbnail ( from left image ) is missing the color, it looks different than it should.

This other illustrate the behavior on the Library... Grid preview looks different than single image preview.

wrongcoloring2.jpg

Another example.. thumbnail image coloring is different than the same image on the Develop mode.

Grain example..

Image 1:   Grain applied and looks big ruff and image lose quality
Image 2:   Zoom in and image loading
Image 3:   Grain size applied and image looks correct.. until you change image and then go back to the same so it looks back like Image 1

When using Smart Previews with the original files disconnected there is an issue with application of Grain. It appears the Grain Size is not scaled down to the reduced resolution of the Smart Preiview, which makes it appear coarser. See this post for more information:

https://feedback.photoshop.com/conversations/lightroom-classic/lightroom-classic-v10-poor-photo-in-t...

Concerning the color and tone differences try setting 'Use Graphics Processor' to OFF in Edit> Preferences> Performance tab. Restart LrC after making this change and see if the issue persists.

Thanks Todd.

Looks like the grain behavior is no longer present, but the Thumbnail preview problem is there even after switching off the GPU, I'm attaching a video to illustrate this better, pay attention to the lower right images and see how the thumbnails change their color to a "flat color", but once you click on the thumb again it recovers the edited preview.. a few clicks later and it loses the color again and turns "flat", this behavior wasn't present in 9.4, so is for sure that is something v10 introduced.

I can't duplicate the issue on my Windows 10 system using LrC 10.1. Perhaps someone landing here with a Mac system running OSX 10.16 can check it out.

Thanks to follow up Todd... I just asked another photographer using MacOs Big Sur 11.0.1 and LrC v10.1 and she confirm that is having the same erratic behavior with the thumbnail previews...  I'm going to do some tests this weekend with MacOS Catalina 10.15.7 and see if with that OS this behavior duplicates..  but so far 3 people confirmed the issue, you dont really notice it until you pay attention to the thumbnails in the Develop mode or in the Library grid view.

I just Tried to replicate on my Catalina system and I dont see the grain issue - so maybe it has to do with BIg Sur?  (Or maybe my image was not quite like yours!)

One reoccurring situation I see is that you are comparing images, be they thumbnails or loupe views with different border/background colors.

So you look at an image with a white background the other with gray background, hence the eye sees the images differently.

Mmm i don't think that is the situation here Golding because if you look at the video around sec 20 and you pay attention ti the 2 images of the guy hugging from behind (12 and 13) I click on image 10 and then image 13 changes the color, pay attention yo the skin tones, after a few other clicks, image 12 changes too until I click in the thumbs again and it recovers the color.

Ok, another person just confirms that after updating to macOS Big Sur the thumbnail preview issue happened.. with MacOs Catalina everything was ok, but with Big Sur things got messy.

If you haven't already done so, then please submit your findings re colour and Big Sur to the Lightroom Classic Feedback Forum at https://feedback.photoshop.com/topics/lightroom-classic/5f5f2093785c1f1e6cc40872 Doing so is more likley to be picked up by Adobe QE.

I have just found that if I set the Calibration version in the Develop Module panel from Version 5 (current) back to Version 4, the Library Preview will again match the Develop edits. (I'm using LR Classic, 10.1 on iMac with Big Sur as OS.)

Did this ever get resolved. It's very annoying. I'm on 11.3.1 and have just seen this behavior.
