For those who have observed the life cycle of LR1 & 2, can you extrapolate for LR4?

Not soon. If you're thinking of getting LR3, LR4 is long enough away that it shouldn't change your decision.

There is a past timeline for Lightroom at http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d3/Dn_lightroom_release_history.png that may be helpful.

We're about halfway to the next version: We're at LR 3.3 and LR 2.7 was the last version of the previous sequence.

Judging by past releases, there is one major version of LR for each major version of Photoshop. Photoshop is released approximately every 18 months, and LR is usually released near this juncture, plus or minus one LR minor-version. The next Photoshop version should be out Fall of 2011, so LR 4 will likely be out anywhere between Spring 2011 and Spring 2012, where I'd guess it'd be closer to 2012.

Of course the economy and world events or even a corporate acquisition or merger, or even a major shift is computing hardware or what clients spend their time doing, might change things, somewhat. What's the next hot thing: 3D-stereo retouching, or a tablet version, or a cloud version, or maybe a subscription-based model to help even out the cashflow? Hopefully they're working on soft-proofing, unless they're waiting for printed materials to become obsolete and negate the need for it.

If it will be in 2012, I'll better not wait & get LR 3 then.

Not before LR3 has been fixed, I hope.
