Hi all,
Since version 10 I have had to disable the use of the GPU in LR classic. It has been unusable, I was getting the spinning wheel all the time when editing, moving sliders, using the clone tool, etc. when the GPU was enabled. Lightroom was too slow to react and so I disabled it and kept working, hoping the next version will fix it...
Today, version 10.1 came out - I updated and re-enabled the GPU hoping that issue was fixed. But, it's actually much much worse now, when trying to move/drag sliders around it will cause my computer to freeze to a point I have to turn it off and on again, I can't even force quit the app or anything like that.
I realize I have an older GPU, but I had zero issues with versions 9 and earlier.
Any advice, ideas, anyone else seeing this too?
It's my work so very important to have it back up sooner than later, I hope.
Thanks!
I am on macOS Mojave 10.14.6
GPU is Gigabyte R9 280X

Yes, It can be pretty annoying to hear someone say "Go back to 9" right?
I already did so much since then, that 9 catalog is old now and not usable, we can not go back to 9.
It needs to be fixed.

The exact same thing happens to me. this is very difficult. Now I have turned off gpu acceleration and it seems to be working again. But first of all, I uninstalled and reinstalled version 10.1 from scratch. sorry for my english.

Same problem here since 10.1 update. Adobe, this is a HUGE bug. It crashes the OS and forces me to reboot by pressing the power button. This is something I have never seen on my iMac. Please, Adobe, solve this bug, this is really too important.

I agree, this bug is DEBILITATING. I have LR 10.1. I was running on the Catalina platform when I upgraded LR and the problems began. I tried reverting to a previous version of LR Classic, instead of reverting it uninstalled the program completely. I reinstalled and then updated to Big Sur (thinking that it might be an incompatability issue with the OS). The problems persisit. I cannot do any edits whatsoever -- it crashes the OS. If I wait long enough, the system will reboot. I've had to use the power button to turn it off to speed up the process. Help please!

In LrC, starting at v10.0, see if any third party plug-ins are causing problems.
For starters, bring up the Plug-in Manager and check each plug-in for error messages. Updates may be required.
You may also want to disable the plug-ins to see if the problem goes away, even if no error message appears in the manager.
just a hunch.

I've done a clean reinstall, the problem remains. It's unlikely caused by the plug-ins anyway, as the plug-ins normally caused the program frozen, but wouldn't kill the OS.
It's unbelievable that Adobe hasn't respond to this problem at all; I mean, at least they should warn their customers not to update to 10.1 for now?! Wouldn't be surprised if Adobe get sued by the professional photographers for damaging their livelihood.

Hi GoldingD - All plugins are up to date here, but I see no reason that this would be related to a plugin.
This system I use processes Sony A7r4 files easily, nothing like this has happened until Lightroom 10.0 & 10.1.
On 10.0 if the GPU is enabled the slowness/glitches appear quickly into editing an image, and on 10.1 it ends with the whole system halts and crash, you cant ESC out of it or force quit or anything else, hard reset is the only option.
It is a pretty serious bug and like thetankengine said, I dont understand why there is no official warning or response from Adobe.

I am having the same problem after updated to 10.1 few hours ago. My iMac's fan is running so loud, lagging, and super slow. Especially when I use crop tool, it just stop for 3 ,4 seconds. Also after cropping done, the preview images are unusualbe. I'd like to go back to 10.0 versoion, but it's pain in the ass to re-setup all my presets and catalogs.
Now I have to turn off my GPU, and it's working and better, but still lagging.
It's the worst update ever. Please fix this issues ASAP Adobe Team! I have to finish my all weddings before this Christmas!!!

Same problem here. I'm a LR user since the first version many years ago, no problems until a few days ago. Now since the last upograde I cannot use it.
As soon as I go to the develop modul the computer crashes and the spinning wheel stay on forever. I need to make an hard shutdown. Adobe needs to fis the problem, at the end we pay to use LR.

As others have mentioned, turning off 'Use Graphics Prosessor' in Preferences/Performance is a temporary fix.

Totally froze the computer after upgrading to 10.1, Mac 10.14.6 as well, macPro w/64GB Ram. Reverted to previous edition and all seems to be well. Obviously a buggy upgrade. Danger, Will Robinson, danger!

Go to the Creative Cloud app where you click "Update" Select LR Clasic, and it will show you are in 10.2 Click on nthe three buttons on the right, a selection will be "Other Version" and when you click there it will show 10 as the first one below 10.2. Just click on that and will take you back to before.
