P: AI Masks Require updating and/or disappear

Community Beginner ,
May 29, 2025 May 29, 2025

Hello,

I recently had a call with Adobe support with no luck. I have found some threads on this but nothing presents a solution and it seems hard to find what the actual issue is.

If I edit a client gallery and use any healing brush tool or AI masking tool, the mask or healing brush/generative AI will get a red dot underneath after going back to the start of the gallery, my AI edits are gone....

I also noticed this happens 100% of the time when I quite and reopen lightroom, I can fix the mask, update ai settings but it just resets each time I open lightroom.

We tested a new catalogue, we tested a bunch of things with no luck.

We really need a fix on this Adobe it is killing workflow, not sure what broke this setting. I can't revert to an old version because I have lots of photos (I do 1 catalogue per year) and can't go back weeks of client work.

Also this catalogue was started at the begining of 2025 so there is no version 13 of this catalogue to revert to and test.

PLEASE HELP ADOBE!

Hi @Carolin27339437zokw! 😊

Could you share a bit more about what's happening? What version of Lightroom Classic are you using, and what's your operating system? Does this issue occur with every mask you create, or just specific ones?

Here are a couple of things we can try:

1. Compatibility Check: Make sure the edits made with newer versions of Adobe Camera Raw are compatible with your version of Lightroom Classic. Sometimes, edits from newer versions might not work well with older versions.
2. Reapply the Mask: If the mask still isn't updating, try removing it and reapplying it to see if that helps.

Let me know how it goes!

Best, Alek

Hello Aleke,

thank you for youre help. Today i updated all (Photoshop, Lightroom, Camera Raw). I use Apple Imac. There was no a problem with the mask, just today. In all of my old galeries, Lightromm wants, that i update the KI masks. I never had a problem with that before. Now in all old galeries is that the problem.

Greetings

@heidih86621288, these symptoms can occur when LR can't write the .lrcat-data file for some reason, either because LR has corrupted it or there is a permissions issue. LR stores computed masks in that file. Try these steps:

1. In LR, do Edit > Catalog Settings > General > Show. That will open Windows File Explorer on the current catalog folder.

2. Exit LR.

3. Move the file <catalog>.lrcat-data to the Desktop.

4. Start LR.

5. In Library Grid view (not Loupe view), select all photos and do Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings. That will recompute all the AI masks, which could take a while.

Hey Simone, have you managed to find a work around for this yet?  I have created a couple of new cataloges since this started happening and my latest cataloge is now working fine (but when I revisit the old catalogs they're still having this issue)

I've searched the community but can't seem to find a topic similar to mine. I'm sorry if there is.

If I remove something with the AI tool it works, if I export the file immediatly the adjustments are saved but if I don't after a couple of minutes adjustments are lost. (Lr is saying to "update AI settings" and "Delete settings need to be updated".

It's a bit annoying...

I'm also using Imagen AI, maybe there's something there?

Anyone has an idea?

THANK YOU!

AI stuff is stored in 'catalogname.lrcat-data'. Sometimes this file gets corrupted, or its privileges are reset, so Lightroom is no longer able to write to it. Try this: remove this file from your catalog folder, so Lightroom will rebuild it. You will once more have to select all images and update AI, but then the problem should be solved.

Marion

Hi @marion25155790ji34! Welcome to the community, and sorry you're experiencing this frustrating issue.

Lightroom Classic stores AI masks in the 'Catalogname.lrcat-data' file. Sometimes, this file can get corrupted or have incorrect preferences, causing masks to need constant updates.

To test this, move the file out of your catalog folder and start Lightroom Classic. You'll see a dialog about the missing data; just click 'Continue'. Lightroom Classic will recreate the file. Now, try updating one of the masks and see if it sticks this time. If it does, you'll need to update all your masks, but hopefully only this one last time.

Good luck! Let me know if this helps.

Alek

Hallo Caro,

Danke Dir.

Liebe Grüße

Stefanie

Quick note: before trying the solution below, it would be super helpful if you could send us your catalog so we can do some testing on our end. Feel free to DM me. Thanks a bunch!

Hi @Carolin27339437zokw and @stefanieh54261563
Sorry to hear about the issues you're having with AI masks.
Lightroom Classic stores AI masks and Generative Remove patches in the 'Catalogname.lrcat-data' file.

To help others, can you clarify which particular steps fixed your issue?  Thanks.

1. Close Lightroom
2. Go to the folder that contains your LR catalogue.
3. Rename .Ircat-data file OLD.Ircat-data.
4. Re-open Lightroom, lightroom will create a new lrcat-data file.
5. In Library grid view, select all photos and go to Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings, wait the few mins for all AI masks to update.

AI mask edits are now sticking, it no longer is saying update masks everytime I click a photo to edit, even if I had just updated.

DANKE
