Lightroom Classic CC - Disk Space info not showing free disk space

Explorer ,
Nov 11, 2018 Nov 11, 2018

The disk space info on the Folders in Lightroom CC is not showing the FREE disk space pf the drive. Under my Macintosh HD, the Disk Space info is showing 149GB/1TB.

However, when I control + click and choose Get Info, the available space is showing as 272GB.

This change happened in the last day 10 November 2018. Despite updating to latest version of Lightroom, this has not fixed the disk space info. I am using iMac, and macOS Mojave 10.14.1.

Can anyone help? Thanks.

The disk space that the Finder shows is 272.93 (123.9 purgeable). AFAIK, that means that this 123.9 GB is taken, but can be made free if necessary. This could be a Time Machine cache or some other cache. So the real free space is 272.93 - 123.9 = 149 GB and that is exactly what Lightroom reports.

Thanks.

I think the problem is not with LR but with the Mac OS purgeable file feature (Optmize storage feature).

I started LR with 188GB free space. I then moved about 75GB to an external drive and deleted maybe 10GB more, and emptied the trash. And I end up with 149GB free space after that without doing anything else part from the above!

There is also a "Feature" in OS X and Time Machine that makes temp backups when there is no TM drive connected and TM is turned on.

At least there was back when I used a Mac notebook.

That stores and or makes copies of deleted files just in case you deleted in error. This can use lots of disk space. The way to stop it from happening is to turn TM off.

Just Shoot Me

Glad you mentioned it. Because my TM drive is always connected to the iMac, I didn't check but for some reason, the drive had been turned off. Whether that caused the issues I saw, I don't know and I'm not going to test it!

By turning the TM function off all those temp backup files will be deleted. You can then turn TM back on and making sure the TM drive is connected and turned on, functioning, no more temp backups will be created.

Not sure what you mean. It is clearly showing Disk Space FREE as posted in your screen shot.

LR is reporting what LR sees as Free disk space.

Then you have What Is, Exactly, 1 KB, 1 MB, 1 GB, 1 TB? is it 1000 or 1024 and so on.

Simple fact is you are running out of disk space especially for a drive that hods the OS and your programs let alone all your image files and other important files.

Thanks to everyone who commented.

I think LR's disk space is definitely linked to the Optimised disk storage/Purgeable files feature. However - and this is just for everyone's FYI - LR has worked fined until yesterday (which is when I updated to the latest Mojave version). Whether this is the cause or not, I don't know.

When I deleted 10GB of files, LR registered that immediately. But now it is not immediate.

I have been trying to fix this issue all day but not really succeeded in finding the cause. I tested to see what would happen when I moved a folder from LR to an external drive (about 6GB):

  • When moved, the free disk space didn't change.
  • Then I moved the folder back into LR - now the free disk space went DOWN by 6GB.

I then closed LR, left it for several hours and reopened it. It now shows 241GB free disk space! I added 600MB of files into the HD and NOTHING else - not in LR or the Mac. But the free space had gone up! But it is closer to what I expected the free disk space to be after clearing about 75GB of files earlier.

So it seems to be taking the Mac a long time to process files being cleared or moved to an external HD.

You may have noticed lots and lots of problems in this forum in which the word Mojave comes up, apparently a very very dirty word.
