I have a issue and can no longer open Lightroom Classic.  It just continues to crash when I try to start it.  I have done everything I can think of and nothing fixes it.  I would love some help with this one.

What happened:  Yesterday I was working in LR without issue.  I had uploaded some 700 pictures and then later in the day I returend to work on them again but this time I was going back and forth between LR and PS.  When I was in PS one time I got a crash notice from LR.  After that point LR would not open it would just give me the crash report (See below).

What I have tried:

1.  Reset preferences.  Did they a couple of times and rebooted inbetween.

2.  Uninstalled LR and rebooted.

3.  Disabled my Windows Defender and Firewall and rebooted

4.  Uninstalled PS (it works fine but at somepoint during all this process it updated and figured I would give it a try.  Still had the problem.  And then reinstalled it with no change

5.  I read the crash report not know anything about it.   Read something about <crash exception="EXCEPTION_IN_PAGE_ERROR" exceptionCode="0xc0000006" instruction="0x00007FFFBF8886CE">.  I went online and followed a scan and repair via Cmd line that do anything or find anything.

I'm stuck!  Anyone have anythoughts?

Sorry for going radio silent on this.  I was having a lot of problems with this site and didn't realize my question actually got posted.  I just do ever have many problems so I'm out of practice posting.  Let me get down to business...

Sorry about not posting the versions of the software.  It was Lightroom version 10.3 and Adobe Photoshop Version: 22.4.3 20210708.r.317 bb896cc x64.  But let me stress that what was happening had nothing to do with Photoshop in the end (99.9% positive).

Now for th

HI, Not being a tech guru, I dont know what happened or is happening.

However, when. you uninstalled LR and also Photoshop, did you delete the preferences and internal settings for those applications? I am on a MAc, and both applications insert multiple settings in the system when they install and or update.

And did you uninstall through the CLoud or just delete the applications?

One person I tried to help had just selected the application and clicked delete.

So first step would be to list:

Your operating system and what versions of LR and PS you WERE using...

And then maybe one in the group with more technical knowledge might be able to chime in.

First up, a bit of being a pest, being pickey. Would recommend listing LrC version in any posting. Now, right now, solvable as it is in the crash report, but just saying.

<crashreport serviceVersion="4.7.0" clientVersion="4.7.0" applicationName="Adobe Lightroom Classic" applicationVersion="10.3" build="[202105281559-8dc50eb4]" source="Windows-Client" crashType="n/a">

Moving on

Actual first up, lock file. As LrC crashed, the lock file LrC creates when you open a catalog, would have not been deleted. Presence of a lock file prevents LrC from opening a catalog. When you start LrC it creates that lock file. When LrC is properly closed, it deletes that lock file.

Following is a link on deleting the lock file. Be very careful to select the correct file.

<crash exception="EXCEPTION_IN_PAGE_ERROR" exceptionCode="0xc0000006" instruction="0x00007FFFBF8886CE">

and

<stackStatement index="0" address="0x00007FFFBF8886CE" symbolname="luaopen_WFSQLiteSetLogicImp"/>

hmm, SQLite, so very likely involves the catalog (LrC catalog is a SQLite database)

This may not be the cause, but it is an issue

<gpuinfo availability="Running/Full Power" adapterCompatibility="NVIDIA" adapterRAM="4095 MB" caption="NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB" description="NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB" driverDate="20200930000000.000000-000" driverVersion="27.21.14.5671"

 That GPU driver, version 456.71, is way out of date, current is v471.41

Old GPU drivers can be troublesome in LrC.

Disabled my Windows Defender and Firewall and rebooted

Ok, but do you have another antivirus program running. Something like Kaspersky?

You may want to post your issue over at the official Adobe feedback site, where Adobe Techs respond, Include LrC program name (Lightroom Classic) , version (10.3), Operating System name and version (Windows 10 Home Edition, version 20H2,  build 19042), and that Crash Report.

And an inclusive list of what you have attempted, with links as to how you attempted  (how you reset the preference file, how you uninstalled the installed LrC)

Now for the update:  After a lot of trouble shooting and I now believe it has something to do with my hard drives.  It doesn't make any sense whatsoever since I'm not having any issues with other file types but there is something going on that drive.  Let me explain...

The pictures and Catalog exist on the same folder.  In one of my attempts to open Lightroom I actually had to reinstall Lightroom and create a NEW catalog.  A first I moved the Catalog to a SSD and attempted to use it.  I worked for a little bit and then I started having problems again where it would crash but not before noticing some of my files were corrupted.

I started over but this time when I reloaded Lightroom I created a fresh catalog on the SSD and only imported all the recent pictures plus a few older ones.  I got excited because it seem to working but again it started having issues again and files would show up corrupted BUT Lightroom would not crash or if it did it would reopen.  Long story short I realized the first problem of Lightroom not loading was because files were being corrupted and Lightroom just couldn't handle it.

You might ask why the photos are corrupted, I still don't know.  It is random and I could work on the file one minute and 10 minutes later would be corrupted.  The files were from different cameras, they were loaded from multiple cards, different methods, etc.   What was common between them all is they all landed on the HDD.  For whatever reason my older files seem to be ok and when I realized there might be an issue I quickly made sure I had backups on other systems (which I do).    In addition some new downloads from other sources were having issues.

Finally I loaded the same exact pictures to another drive (a SSD) and worked on files on both drives (same files).  I even loaded them up in the same Catalog.  Those that were on my HDD would have issues and those on my SSD zero issues.  I have been doing this for 4 days now and it has remains constant, I work on files on the HDD and about 5-10% would be corrupted at some point. I could delete the files load the fresh ones off my backups and they would be fine.  The common success factor right now is working the files on the SDD with zero issues (again they are loaded in the same catalog as my HDD).

The weird thing is I’m still not having any issues with any other files on my HDD.  I have scanned it and it seems to be fine.  I have no detectable viruses.   Right now I’m double checking my files to make sure I have multiple sources and will either pull the drives and toss them OR reformat them and sort of start over with them slowly and see if I have any issues with them.  In the mean time I will work off other drive resources.

Glad to hear soemthing is working - and thanks to GOldingD for his intricate findings!

FOr those HDDs, do you have an application that can check the health of the drives? As a Mac person, I rely on TechToolPro and a separate program  - use both - to check the drives themselves. I am sure there are equivalents in PC world.

Once you are sure every files is duplicated on another drive or two that are working well, I would suggest running a program to test the questionable drive, first with the files still on it, then after wiping it clean or reformatting it.

Hope you do get it going smoothly again!
