Lightroom Classic faster on Intel MacBook Pro, Slow on Windows 10 PC Workstation

Hello,

 

I have a 2015 Macbook pro, nothing fancy. Lightroom works like a dream on it. I also operate on a HP Z8 Workstation. It's no exaggeration to say that lighroom slows down my PC to a halt. When importing photos especially, it is sitting and waiting upwards of 30 minutes for the program to be usable, and even then it's spotty. I have zero clue as to why it would work fine on a laptop and be unusable on what is supposed to be a workstation designed for this type of work.

You are working with a 5K monitor; what kind of previews are you generating while Importing images in Lightroom Classic?

Share a screenshot of the Import settings that you're applying while you import. The Standard preview size tries to match the resolution of your screen.


Try using minimal previews & let us know how it goes. Thanks!

I believe I figured out the issue. I changed the import settings to 'Minimal' under Preview settings wehen importing. Seemed to do the trick

I'll help you figure this out. Thanks for sharing the info about the machine. I'll need the Lightroom Classic > Help > System info. Does it slow down after a specific set of steps? Is there a noticeable pattern to this behavior?

 

Besides Lightroom getting slow, does the RAM usage peak, abnormal temps, CPU usage, and unexpected read/write operations?

To begin troubleshooting, test some variables like:

The issue is mostly with importing photos. It totally crashes and makes my computer unusable

You're using the 'Add' import option, which suggests that you have already placed the photos in the final location (i.e disk and folder hierarchy). Is this correct? If not, then please describe your import procedure (e.g. are the photos imported from a card reader, direct from camera, etc). Some additional information relating to the imports would also be useful:

 

1. How many photos are you importing

2. What size (i.e. MB not MP) are the photos?

3. How much remaining space do you have on your 'C' drive?

4. Which drive are your photos stored and has it got enough spare space to store these photos?

5. Do you have a virus checker and is it continually monitoring your disks?

Choosing to import your photos using Minimal preview will certainly improve the speed of the import, but Standard-sized previews will still need to be built if you're going to be working in the Library module. Sure, you can build the previews manually after import or leave them to be built automatically when you scroll the Library grid. Manually building them is to be preferred as automatic will interfere with other activities you may carry out in the Library module.
