Lightroom Classic Running Slow on Windows 11

Computer Specs.

Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-10850K CPU @ 3.60GHz 3.60 GHz

64.0 GB RAM

NVIDIA Quadro RTX 4000

1 TB SS Drive with 737GB Free

8 TB data drive with 4 TB free

Updated from Windows 10 to Windows 11 a few months after release.

Eversince update Lightoom Classic runs really really slow, locking up all the time, won't load photos, takes it's time to process photos.  Processing RAW images from older Canon 7D.  I have made all the normally suggested performance suggestions.  I have removed Lightroom and reinstalled.  The only think I haven't done is remove all of Adobe and reinstall.

Any Suggestions?

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. We are sorry for the trouble with Lightroom. We are here to help!

Could you please share the version of Lightroom Classic you are working with? The slowness in your system started after Windows 11 update, right? Does the freeze happen at random times or during any specific task or operation? Are only Adobe apps freezing/ slowing down, or do any other apps also behave similarly?

Most 2022 apps are compatible with Windows 11, and we are constantly testing and optimizing for the best performance. Please check this article to learn more: https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/kb/windows-11.html.

Suppose there are any pending updates for the operating system or graphics drives. Please check this to troubleshoot Windows system errors & freezes: https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/troubleshoot-system-errors-freezes-windows.html.

We hope this helps,

Regards,

Ranjisha

Sorry for the delay in replying.  I am using the most current version of Lightroom Classic.  I update when the updates drop.  The slowness of Lightroom Classic started after updating to Windows 11.  The Freezing happens randomly.  I also notice it takes a while to load images back up when changing modules or folders.  It also hangs up when apply setting to multiple images.  Photoshop seems to run pretty well but Premier Pro is almost unusable.  I don't use Illistrator very much so not sure on that one.  The 3rd party apps I use with Adobe seem to run smoothly.  It's almost like the Adobe apps are only using the CPU memory and not any of my RAM.

Try updating your graphics driver by going directly to the manufacturer's web site:
https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html#solution-4

If that doesn't help, please copy/paste here the entire contents of the LR menu command Help > System Info -- that will let us see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running.

Hi, I have the same issue here. My computer is pretty robust, with 32Gb RAM, I have LR insalled on SSD and my catalogues are also on SSD, Win11.

It runs excruciatingly slow. When I start the LR the interface freezes and takes tens of seconds until I can do anything. Most operations are sluggish, and it's painfull to work with it. Drives me nuts 😞

Hi @Zdeto

Thanks for reaching out. Which version of Lightroom is installed on your system?

Have you tried the steps mentioned by @johnrellis ? You can try optimizing the application, details here: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/optimize-performance-lightroom.html
Let us know how it goes.

Hello!

Sorry for replying late, my notice email got into spam.

So, I have LR Classic 12.2.0.2, my graphic drivers are always up to date, and I user NVIDIA Geforce Experience that notifies me as soon as there are new drivers. I did all the settings from the video on the page you sent me.

Just now, I tried to enter into Preferences, Edit > Preferences and that opened after 14seconds after I clicked in the menu!!! I think I'll record a video with LR starting up to show better how long it takes until it becomes operational.

I can't edit a post, so I'm adding here my system info as saved from LR. I recorded a video to see how long it takes to start up and become usable. Windows is on SSD, the catalog is on SSD. This is not normal... 😉

Moved the catalog to my M.2 drive (c:) and it made no difference.  Just clicking a different thumbnail in the library (grid) takes what seems like half a second.  Running procmon.exe I see these "lurching" "querydirectory" and registry queries in a cycle of about every 30 seconds.  I found the pattern and a round of those queries is attached.  Seems like unnecessary busy-ness.  The number of plugins wasn't an issue before upgrading to Windows 11.  Almost seems like the UI itself is unresponsive.  I had 1:1 previews before and that didn't help, so I tried smart previews this time, also didn't help.  Switching folders doesn't cause a slow-down, but selecting a thumbnail is excruciatingly slow.  Hitting D to switch to develop mode also lags at least half a second, just to even switch to the Develop view, and then another half a second to render.  Many other things seem to take some amount of extra time to respond to mouse or keyboard input.  PC Mark thinks my system is great, the only slowness I'm seeing is in lightroom.  Photoshop seems fine.

The lack of response from the officials is annoying...
But, I kinda solved myself the issue. I uninstalled and removed all Adobe software from my computer. Even manually deleted folders that were stubborn... Then I downloaded Creative Cloud, fresh installed Lightroom Classic and opened a catalog. Everything went smoothing again. No more delays, no more frozen interface. I can finally work again, hurray! :)))

Hi @djharris69, sorry that you see the same issue and I missed out on it. Thanks for sharing the system info. Can you please tell us if you have tried the optimization steps and re-installation of the application? Since when are you seeing this issue?

I just discovered a possible solution, I uninstalled my AVG software as Windows Defender supposedly works as well now.  No more lagging UI-building issues!

I'm running into similar problem.

Updated system to Windows 11 and noticed that Lightroom Classic is running painfully slow.

I've reinstalled it, with deleting all it's files and caches except for my catalogue file.

On Windows 10 LR ran fine, both on CPU and with GPU acceleration enabled.

On Windows 11 LR is unusable on CPU only, edits takes seconds to update when moving any slider.

With GPU support editing is fast, almost as good as previously on Windows 10, but when adjusting the sliders, resolution is lowered much more often.

One more example, in Library, when scrolling with mouse on full size photos, changing photos is as fast as usual, but the appearing photo is pixelated for half a second before rendering in full quality. It's not a big issue, but on Windows 10 it was rendering ultra fast immediately in full resolution, even when mouse scrolling very, very fast through all my photos. I mention it just to show that there is some slowness hapenning somewhere.

Well.. I got the exact same issue with windows 11.
It was running fine with windows 10 but when I switch to Windows 11, nightmare of photo editing with Lightroom Classic begins...
I have 3 SSD on my computer: 1 for windows, 1 for large files / games, 1 for software apps
Lightroom classic was installed on my third SSD which is dedicated for software apps.
When you install LrC on other drive instead of your principle drive (windows), for some reason it runs slow and increase your CPU usage ....
I finally decided to remove all caches and LrC folders from my third drive and reinstall it into my main drive (windows) and now, it runs smoothly.
I don't know why it happens only with windows 11 but my thought is that using LrC with windows 11 doesn't share the same amount of work between several drives.and it keeps looking caches/plugins and increase your CPU usage.

Disable HDR in windows settings, it is a conflickt between nvidia drivers, win11 and lightroom. This is the only thing I've found that fixes it (other using CPU instead of GPU for acceleration).
