Lightroom Classic Slow after Upgrade to 11.5 on Mac M1

Contributor ,

After the update to 11.5, performance is very slow on my iMac M1. I purged the cache but don't see any other changes. What else can I try?

It's everything. There are delays just moving basic adjustment sliders.

Is the Library Module slow also? Or just the Develop Module?

If sliders are slow, then check that Graphics Processor is set to Auto as shown in attached screenshot.

Is that a change? Everything was working fine for over a year until this update.

It would also be helpful if you copied the section of 'System Info' as shown in below screenshot. You can find System Info Lightroom Classic Help menu.

Your System Info indicates LrC is using iMac 4.5K display and an external 6K display. Try disconnecting the 6K display to see if that helps with performance.

It would also be worth checking Activity Monitor to see how much memory (and size of swap) is being used by LrC while editing with and without the 6K display connected.

That is interesting. My secondary display is for proofing/color correction and is a 4KHDR display. I don't think it can go above that but I'll check on why it's reporting that way.

In the original post you stated that the computed was an M1 iMac. According to Apple, the M1 iMac has a 24 inch 4.5k display. System Info is also indicating that the other display has a resolution of 6016 by 3384 pixels, which is 6K. The only other way that this resolution will be reported by System Info would be if you set the external display to 3008 by 1692 pixels. If that's the case, then it's a non integer resolution for a 4K display, and macOS will scale up to 6K, then scale back down again. Then net result being a huge hit on performance. This video explains https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpX561_XM20 and also check out this article https://bjango.com/articles/macexternaldisplays/

Edit: macOS scales up to 5K (not 6K as mentioned above) then back down to the user setting (in above case 3008 by 1692 pixels), which LrC then doubles to 6K. The only way to avoid the multiple scaling is to use the default setting for a 4K display is the native resolution or 1080P (i.e. 1920 by 1080 pixels).

@Dăuceanu

as your problem is likely different than the original one in this thread, let's avoid confusions and discussing two different problems in the same thread. Please start a brand new thread with your problem, describe in detail, and provide all relevant information (much of which you have already provided).

You have only 8GB of shared memory. Therefore, the 'Auto' setting will not provide full GPU acceleration for exports. You can override the memory limitation imposed by Auto by choosing Custom mode and checking the box labelled 'Use GPU for Export.  This should improve your export times, but not by as much as would be the case if you'd purchased the 16GB version of the M2 MacBOOK Pro.

Yep, exactly why jumping is bad form

At any rate:

Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs.

also, how much free space in % on the hard drive your catalog is on.

also, how large do you allow the Camera RAW CACHE to get?
