Lightroom speed collapses completely after short time of use

Lightroom 13.1

Ligthroom has never excelled at speed with me. This problem only seems to be increasing over the years. My system consists of an I9 processor, 32 Gb of memory and an Nvidia 3060Ti videocard. The database is on a fast SSD with more than enough free space. The video card settings are optimized for Ligthroom. The source files are on a NAS with a 10 Gb network connection, the source files are on SSDs in the NAS. The database contains about 500,000 photos. In short, everything is laid out for sufficient speed. The system works very well with Adobe Bridge and Photoshop.
Lightroom is only used for database management. Tagging is the main area of work. The Ligthroom database is optimized before I start at all. For tagging, the spray can method is used the most, which should be the fastest method in my opinion. The start is always the same Ligtroom can just keep up with the speed of tagging. After I tag 10-20 photos you already notice that the speed slows down. I can keep working, but Lightroom seems to lag behind more and more. Eventually the system literally comes to a standstill. I can only end the program by using the windows task manager. I start Lightroom again, optimize it and then it starts again from scratch. The problem is that I can't speed up at all, in fact I can't even just work with it.... I see from the reports that I am not the only one and I have followed the advice given by Adobe but unfortunately it does not solve the problem. The question is very simple how to proceed?

Regards

Reinder

Did you install the latest GPU driver for your Nvidia card directly from Nvidia?

https://www.nvidia.com/download/index.aspx

Also known to fix various issues is resetting the preferences:

Thanks for your input. Both suggestions are implemented in my system setup. But no real results unfortunately.

Lightroom starts its job just as everybody would like to have it. But as stated its dying quite soon after doing some work with it.

Not that it would fix the issue, but you are not using the latest driver available: https://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/218115/en-us/

... just to rule things out ...

I know this discussion but have spent so much time and money on it by now that confidence that a solution will or does exist has actually dropped to zero. Perhaps it would be better to choose a different path, read another platform....

Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut out as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs and it takes up vast amounts of scroll space making the reply less readable and less likely that others will bother with your post.

As your issue is in the Library module, not the develop module, and as you are not accomplishing anything requiring large computer resources (LrC is a resource hog). I suspect that your slightly out of date GPU driver (only a couple of months old) is not the issue. But you may want to address that. Per the NVIDIA driver site, current version is v551.23

Installed Plugins:
1) AdobeStock
2) Flickr
3) LogiOptions
4) Topaz Photo AI

If you are not using that LogiOptions plugin to support the extra buttons on your mouse like a loupedeck to assign LrC functions, or (if installed) a the wheel on a NESt keyboard, then remember that the plugin in question is not the driver to simply use the mouse. This plugin is a long time know piece of Dung, that can cause issues., normally upon batch removal of photos. It is probably not causing your current issue, but it may be worth a try to eliminate.

Nothing to do with the problem at hand, but.

As a general caution, Most member will respond upon seeing the word Backups in a library path, where the catalog is located. Issue of concern is are you placing your actual working catalog on the same drive as your backup of the catalog? Please remember good backup practice is to place backups on a different destination a different hard drive, a different NAS or Network location, a different Cloud location (preferably multiple). If the hard drive with you working catalog gets destroyed, so does that backup.

Thanks for you reply, the backup is taken care of. I'm making complete copies of the database and store them on a NAS. The ligthroom backups are on the same ssd because of the productivity issue. I'm tried to minimize network usage to avoid extra bottle necks. When really something happens I simply copy the entie database from the nas. Yes I know I can loose some of my work doing it this way.

Why is this question about a buggy Lightroom moved to a discussion? I need a solution, not a discussion (again).

By @mbmcargoteech

Adobe gets a bit odd about bugs or not bugs. Unless the issue can be repeated, they are likely to move a bug post to discussions.

and FYI see:

Well the solution is very simple, Adobe is welcome to witness the problem here on site every day, The problem is completely reproducible. It always occurs, I don't have to prepare anything....
Now I am faced with the situation that my problem is parked and so nothing actually happens. And unfortunately I am not the only one with this problem....

As I predicted, my bug (performance) has been moved to the discussions by Adobe to die a quiet death. No help, no assistance...only Adobe's invoices seem important. Satisfied customers have long become an afterthought.

Yes, no result. The problem is always the same: the start is exemplary but after tagging 10-20 photos it's like a deflated bicycle tire.....

I see that you have three high resolution displays, all with 3840 x 2160 resolution.

Do you use LrC with a secondary display?

Do you see any speed improvement if you use just one?

Displays: 1) 3840x2160, 2) 3840x2160, 3) 3840x2160

The database is on a fast SSD with more than enough free space. The video card settings are optimized for Ligthroom. The source files are on a NAS with a 10 Gb network connection, the source files are on SSDs in the NAS.

So the catalog is not on the NAS just the photos, Ok, got that.

Adobe apparently supports the photos being on a NAS, but many members, including those with blazing fast LAN's (although you may be a first with SSD in the NAS) eventually have issues. Mind you the typical problem is lost photos in the catalog (easily fixed, probably slower LAN's)

Different NAS units and different NAS Management software and additional packages installed or not installed may enter in on members issues.

Having said all that, If you create a new catalog and import images, but not on the NAS, import them to your local SSD. Does the catalog misbehave?

I should test that but don't see the practical use. My database consists of over 500,000 photos and must be accessible from multiple stations. So putting the photos on a PC is not a workable solution.

By the way, there is no problem with lost data or whatever. The database seems very solid, despite the now hundreds of crashes, there is no data problem at all.

In addition, I can report that the other functionalities in the library are working properly. Images are displayed quickly without significant waiting time. Fetching from images is almost simultaneous with scrolling. The filters work fine and sufficiently fast. I mainly use smart collections and these also function satisfactorily. The speed problems only occur when tagging pictures.

When I start tagging using the sprayer function, the first 2-5 photos are processed almost simultaneously with the clicking of the tool. Then a small lag begins to occur and the system takes 1-3 seconds per tag per image. After about 15-20 photos, the lag increases rapidly and it can take as long as 10-15 seconds for the photo to be tagged. Once this situation is reached I run out of tagging quickly and as I place more tags the processing time increases rapidly. Eventually the system crashes. If the system manages to finish the tag actions it suddenly changes the sorting of file name to capture time. The latter is very annoying because usually the system does not open at the place where I was tagging. In short, there is actually not to work with the tag functionality.

Are you using any antivirus or system cleanup software? That is one of the main causes of slowness in the library module when you are doing tagging and such because the AV software tries to scan the catalog after every minor update to the image metadata. If you are, disable it to test or exclude the catalog and preview database from scanning.

If that's not it, try running a test catalog with enough images in it to make the test a good comparison but running completely from the internal SSD with images also on the internal SSD. The connection to the NAS should not matter but there have been mentions of extreme slowdowns running images from certain NAS devices. I run most of my images from a NAS too and have no issues but there have been others on the forum where that turned out to be problem and fixes usually involved settings changes in the NAS software.
