I have been using Lightroom, first as a priuchased app and then by subscription for over 10 years and have accumulated 88000 edited photos. Having cancelled my subscription after the larger price hike I now discover I cannot access ANY of those edited photos, only the originals that are on my hard drive anyway. It seems to me that my years of work are being held hostage so I resubscribe while for years I paid for the ability to edit. Should I have exported all my photos beforehand, taking ages of my time? Frankly I am disgusted with this treatment.

You haven't lost access. Lightroom Classic should continue to work, except for the develop and map modules. As your edits are in your catalog, not in your images, you will still need to use Lightroom Classic and your catalog to access your editied photos.
