LR Classic 6.14/Windows 10: Problems with WhatsApp images only since 2024 and question on upgrade

Dear LR Classic community,

I have got two "issues" with my LR classic 6.14/Windows 10 home 22h2 build 19045.4291:

1) Is there any chance to update this version to a higher LR classic version, based on the license for LR classic 6.14? The update tool says there are no updates available and I understand the support was stopped in 2022/2023.

2) Only since I restarted work with that version in 2024 already imported and displayed Whatsapp images are not displayed anymore in the LR catalog ("A problem occured when reading the image"). I have read some postings on that dating back to 2018, but have not had problems with that until now. To my knowledge I have not changed any settings - from one day to the other the programm does not show those images anymore. Is this a windows update issue? Or has anything changed due to the stopping of support? I have not worked with Lightroom for a longer time, but certainly since October 2023.

Has anyone kindly an answer to the above? Thanks so much.

Silke

Yes, the current version is Lightroom Classic 13.2. You can go to the Adobe web site and subscribe to the Adobe Photography Plan (not the confusingly named Lightroom Plan). All of your work in Lr 6.14 will be usable in LrC 13.2

I can only guess about the Whats App problem, but usually "A problem occured when reading the image" indicates the file is corrupted and cannot be used. This is usually because of a hardware malfunction somewhere. Nothing in Lightroom or Lightroom Classic has changed as far as what images are supported (except newer image types have been added). Perhaps the problem is that Whats App is handling photos differently somehow (pure guess on my part).

Dear dj_paige,

Thanks for your quick answer - at least to point 1 it was very helpful. I really do not understand why the Adobe Updater has never indicated an update to a higher version, but I will try that. However, my aim is to work offline, solely on my computer. For point 2, images are not corrupted - I can open them with any other program and see preview images in the Windows explorer. Might be this may resolve with a higher version of LR.

Anway, thanks again for having taken your time to answer.

You can work offline with Lightroom Classic 13.2

Preview images can be fine while the actual file is still corrupted. A higher version of LrC cannot undo corruption if it is in the file itself.
