I have been using LR for about 20 years. Yesterday I was looking for an updated version and found LR Claasic 14.xxx. Downloaded and installed that version. Started LR and it tells me that I need to convert my catalog to the new version. Did that. LR opens and tells me that I need to purchase LR Classic. This was not my intention and Adobe doesn't mention this during the upgrade process. I am opposed to "renting" software. So I reinstalled version 6. Now when I open LR it tells me that I cannot open my catalog because it's a newer version. So it looks like Adobe is holding my files hostage unless I send them money. There's a term for that. Anyone have a solution?

An upgrade to a catalog (eg. v6 > v14) uses a copy of the catalog to upgrade.
If you search in Windows folders with File Explorer you will find your original v6 catalog.
Be aware that by installing the CC Desktop App even your Lr6 has converted to a subscription version (possibly with 30days trial). You will need to uninstall the Desktop App, and cancel your CC subscription trial within 14days to avoid fees.
