Recently I have issues with previews. For example - today I built 1:1 previews for a collection of images. Several hours later, there are no previews while working on the collection, and I have to build them again.
I do have the preview cache limit set to 250GB but my preview size is still arounf 100GB
Anyone else recognise this problem?
Could it be that when I close the catalogue and choose the 'optimize' option, that somehow the previews are being deleted?

Check your preview settings in the catalog preferences.

Yeah as I stated I have the "Limit Preview Cache Size" set at 250gb
The current size of the preview cache is 100gb.
Any more ideas?

How the settings for the discarding looks like? These are the settings responsible for deleting the previews.

If I understand your question - you can either choose "Automatically Discard" or "Limit Preview Cache Size" - not both. I chose the latter, so the discard settings are not active.

This new Limit Preview CACHE Size option appears to be bugy. Their are several Posts stating the previews are not actually getting limited. Mostly from members who previews are already past the limit.
Wondering if this feature is working at all as designed.
You may want to revert to one of the old settings. perhaps select Never. And see what occurs.

Yes that's my experience of this new feature. I set a limit and the cache remained above that limit for weeks. In the end I have deleted the cache and am hoping that it will not go above my limit!
Yeah maybe I'll pick 'never' ...
