LR mobile and smart previews

Explorer ,
Dec 19, 2018 Dec 19, 2018

I've been playing with LR mobile to see how it works.  I'd like to have all my collection(s) smart previews downloaded to LR mobile rather than on demand (when you look at a photo).  Is there an way to force all the smart previews for all my collections to download to my iphone's LR mobile?

I'm confused as to what's being stored on the cloud.  I've created collections in LR classic on my iMac and synced to my iPhone with LR mobile.  I thought this would create full copies of my collections in my cloud account but this does not seem to be the case.  When I'm in LR mobile on my iPhone and look at cloud storage it looks like nothing has been used.  I see all my collections on my iPhone so what is suppose to be on the cloud.  I thought my collections were sent to the cloud and then o my iPhone.

To be truthful I really only want to use LR mobile to view my photos. I don't care about editing on my iPhone.  I like the syncing between my iMac and iPhone.  I don't want to load full copies of my pictures on my iPhone, only smart previews.

Any clarification would be appreciated.

Lightroom Classic CC (Desktop focused editing) will sync Collections to your Adobe Creative Cloud smart previews will be uploaded and those can be used to edit the files using your mobile devices that have the Lightroom App installed. These smart previews do not utilise any of your approved limit.

Lightroom CC (The cloud based service) will sync the original files to your Cloud storage and will be applied to your limit.

Have a look at the link below that will explain how they will both function.

In LrMobile, you can tap the button to the right of any individual collection and enable offline editing. To do it to all images, enable offline editing in all collections, or create a single collection named something like "Local", add all photos to it, and enable its offline editing.

If you sync from LR Classic, only smart previews are uploaded. These do not count against your storage.

If you take photos with Lr Mobile or import from Camera Roll, the originals are in the cloud and do use your storage. Especially with more recent phones, which save DNGs, it's well worth taking photos with LrM - I particularly like the HDR option.

Do experiment with adjusting on the phone. It's not perfect and can be fiddly but it can also be convenient. You can edit titles and captions, set ratings and flags. Just avoid entering keywords - sadly, Adobe decided not to sync keywords between mobile and Lr Classic.

Thanks for the explanation on cloud storage.  I can see how indicating you wanted offline editing would load smart previews.  My problem is that I don't see this magic button that enables local editing.  When I look at LR mobile on my iPhone I only see ... to the right of a collection/album.

The ... is the button. "Store Locally" is what offline editing is now called.

I checked the amount of memory that would be required to store the smart previews.  It looks like it is 50% more space than just downloading the actual pictures.  I guess I was hoping smart peviews would be less space rather than more.

50% more space

I cannot believe that would be so-

eg. Looking at one image- my 'original' (NEF) file is 29.7mB   the Smart Preview is 610kB (0.61mB)

I have 1208 photos synced to web mobile- No Cloud space used (from my 20GB).  From my browser the photos vary in size about from about 400kB up to about 1.6MB each. (I do not know how to determine their size downloaded into my iPhone5 for 'offline' !)

Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 14.5.1, Photoshop 26.10, ACR 17.5, Lightroom 8.5, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 15.1.1 .

I have not yet moved my main digital photos into collections for LR mobile to consume.  I'm using a collecion of old scans of photographs and slides that are stored as jpgs.  This collection of jpgs was run through an app that optimized the amount of storage for a given level of quality.  An example collection I was using had 208 photos and storing locally costs 355 meg.  Doing an info on the folder I have the jpgs on my iMac shows 193 meg.  So obviously I could store the original photos using less memory than using smart previews.

My objective is to have on my iPhone around 7000 photos in as little memory as possible with the photos still looking decent even if you do a minor bit of blowing up.  I also want this in local memory so I don't have to worry about my internet connection.

That's perfectly practical and is how I like things too.

I currently have 4000 locally-stored on a 64gb phone and I am sure others have many more. It's roughly 1mb per photo, though the requirement could be higher if you have originals in the cloud. So I would also doubt your 50% more.
