Read all the previous posts I could find with no workable answers.
All the canon software is off verified with task manager, the camera is recognized by the win 10 Pro operating system which is up to date
Capture1 does recognize camera and can work tethered
Using supplied Canon cable
LR does not recognize the camera
Please help
After rebooting and plugging in camera the Canon EOS utility wanted control, I quit out of that.
LR would still not detect the camera.
I go back into task manager and THIS TIME I see a process running from Canon (can't recall exact name) that looked like it might be using the camera driver. I manually stopped that task and THEN LR would detect the camera.
I would be disappointed if this is really required for tethered capture having to go into task manager each time.
I sure don't want to uninstall E

We need the version number of your Lightroom (not words like "latest").

Seriously, a 5 year old camera and running the LATEST version at the time of this post
BTW it's 7.4

Latest version isn't particularly helpful. Canon EOS 7DII requires Lr 6 or higher for tethering support.

My camera is listed. It's a very popular camera around 5 years since introduction
LR ver 7.4

Your original post didn't mention which version of Lr you're using. The 7D MkII was announced on 14 September 2014. That's just under 4 years, not 5.

Well I thought I did by saying latest which it is was but I put the number down. I am on the subscription so updates come periodically and LR has supported the raw files since long before I bought the camera. 5 years was an estimate, I didn't check the release date. Suffice it to say it's not a new camera not yet supported by LR. Been supported for a while now.
I read the other link and the only thing I haven't tried yet is rebooting computer since I am using it right now but will try that shortly. In fact my immediate need for tethering has gone away but I still want the option for the future.
Camera is seen by OS and I can look at what's on the memory card. Capture 1 sees the camera and can control it.
Not familiar with Canon utilities and I didn't see a way to test that software so I am not sure.

For many people asking questions on the forums "the latest version" usually means that the software says it is up-to-date, but oftentimes the software is not the current version series and as such has long since stopped getting updates.
For example, if someone is using LR 6 and says they have the latest version, they really have LR 6.14 even though the actual latest version of LR is 7.4, but the LR 6 person hasn't paid for a subscription so they still have the latest of the older version serial 6. That's why we ask for specific version numbers.

LR 7.4 will do tethered capture just fine with my 7D.2. I am connecting with a USB3 cable from one of my USB drives and it is less than a foot long and I am using Windows 10 with the 1803 update from April. When I first plug it in and turn on the camera, I see a computer symbol on the camera screen, but once I start LR Tethering it switches back to the regular camera display so that is a clue that tethering is connected properly.
Besides Windows recognizing the camera and letting me see the files, I don't have any other tether-capable software installed, not Canon EOS Utilities or Capture One so one of those things might be conflicting and grabbing ahold of the USB connection and not letting LR see it.
Here is a screenshot of LR with tethering loaded and an out-of-focus shot of my window blinds taken with LR:

When I first opened an Explorer window with the tethering control open I got a warning from Windows that it was busy but I closed that and refreshed Explorer and could see the images in Explorer, but only the first one I took, because the others are transferred immediately.

So for me Windows 10 and LR 7.4 are seeing my 7D.2 camera and playing nice with each other. Something else must be blocking LR from seeing your camera on your computer.

I sure don't want to uninstall EOS utility since it's ability to control the camera is extensive, far beyond just capturing an image.
Do you have EOS utility installed on your computer?
I need to do some more testing to see if tweaking task manager each time or not.
Thanks for your help

I don't do tethered shooting and do not have the Canon EOS Utility installed.
You can also have the Canon software output to a specific folder, I think, and have LR Auto Import watching that folder and import when it sees something. Auto-import photos into Lightroom Classic CC
It might be that LR pops up and covers the screen when it Auto Imports so it's probably more for photographers that are doing wired or wireless transmission to their computer while using their camera to take the photos and not using the computer as the shutter button.

I typically don't do tethered shooting either but LR is supposed to do it so I came to the place to get answers.
I was performing micro-focus adjustments for my camera/lens combos and looking for a quick/easy way to view results of different settings, Live view 10x focus vs results before/after MF adjustments. LR is awesome for comparing photos but not so hot at tethered IMHO.
So I ordered software to automate the process (Reikan FoCal).

That would be less of a problem if you have multiple displays so Lightroom can be on one and the EOS Camera control on the other.
And even if one monitor, if you have Windows 10, you can create an extra virtual desktop, put LR doing Auto Import on that, then switch over to the other and use the Canon software to take the photos.
To create a new virtual desktop use Ctrl-Win-D.
To close a virtual desktop use Ctrl-Win-F4
To switch between virtual desktops use Ctrl-Win right-arrow and left-arrow.
Alternatively to using the Ctrl-Win key combinations, if your Windows 10 is new enough, click the Task View button down by the start flag and Cortana and you'll see a list of the desktops across the top and a list of your recent apps below that:

Using those Desktop thumbnails in Task View you can create new, close existing or drag-and-drop apps to another, in this case LR to my second desktop when it was on my first desktop:

If you don't see a Task View button, but your Windows 10 is new enough (mine is 1803 and has it) then right-click on the Task Bar and enable it:

FoCal, oh great, something else to spend money on. Does it do the micro-focus adjustments automatically for the 7D.2 or does it just let you check after you've adjusted things manually?

Send Focal back and save your money. This method uses EOS Utility and does everything on your list but the focus nicroadjustments are visible on the computer screen LIVE.
