Mask delete themselves and all other masks every time I go to apply one

Lightroom Classic 13.2

Windows 10 Pro
Version 22H2
Build 19045.4046

Every time I click to make a mask (K, M, etc) the normal module opens up in the top right, the second I click however it deletes the new mask and any other masks that already exist (which can be added to the picture only via presets). This also begins the "Detecting People ..." dialogue again.

To add insult to injury, returning Lightroom to either of the most recent previous versions results in an "assertion failed" error which does not resolve by following the instructions outlined on the adobe help post about the error.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, @jordanv312650. Welcome to the Lightroom Community. I'll need more info to help you figure this out.

Please share the system info from Lightroom Help > System info > Copy & paste into a text document > upload & attach here.

Where is the catalog stored? On the internal or external drive?

Try these suggestions:

1 - Move the catalog from the to a non-syncing, local folder on your Windows machine.

2 - Launch Lightroom Classic with a new catalog by pressing the ALT key at launch & Create a new catalog on a non-syncing, local folder on your Windows machine.

3 - In the new catalog, go to File > Import from catalog > target your old catalog. Proceed with merging the (potentially) corrupted catalog into the newly made, internal storage-based catalog. For more help via video-based steps, check here. See https://adobe.ly/3NTC9Rv

Let us know how it goes. Thanks!

Hi Sameer,

Thanks for responding, I've attached my system info below.

The catalog is on an internal drive.
A new catalog had the same masking error on the current LR version and also had the same "Assertion failed" error on 13.1.

Cheers,
Jordan

Did anyone figure this out? I am having the same problem completely out of nowhere. One second it was working fine and the next second I cant add a new mask without it deleting all masks and starting the 'Detecting people' process.  I am a volume school photographer - I create an AI mask for thousands of images to let me tweak the white backgrounds in a batch of photos. I then use the brush tool on selected images if I need to do further work on the background. I've done it this way for a long time, and rely on it. So to have it stop working suddenly in busy season is a complete nightmare.

I believe the issue was cause for me by the brush preset having a point color selection included in it (I'm guessing it tried to find the exact color in the image, couldn't and just broke the system) not sure if that's the only thing that can cause it, but I'd say clicking back to one of the default presets (like "exposure") and modifying what you want the brush to do from there (before you mask) would be the best place to start!

Best of luck,

Jordan
