P: Mouse click inaccuracy : Straighten tool & Eye dropper on High DPI monitors at 250% OS scaling

On a HightDPI laptop, the straighten tool and the eye dropper do not click where the mouse points. This is a big enough problem because it makes these tools unusable. Unfortunately, this seems to be a problem of more than six years and still has not been fixed (https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-white-balance-dropper-target-location-is -offset-on-high-dpi-windows-devices / idi-p / 12250363). Could I get information on how this fix stands, especially since Photoshop doesn't have this problem, for example? I have an ASUS ProArt Studio laptop with a 16 "4K monitor with a 250% monitor setting.

With its recommended display resolution of 3840 x 2400, objects on the screen are very small with only 200% scaling. I am not sure how to work around this. Any ideas?

I was afraid you were tripping over the same problem as the others.

Other than living with it, my only suggestion would be to set Windows Scale to 200% and set LR’s Preferences > Interface > Font Size to 250%.  LR’s menu bar and some dialogs will be at 200%, but the rest of the LR interface (e.g. Grid view and the panels) will be at 250%.

I tried that. Unfortunately, even with Windows scaling set to 200%, LR font size 250% gives me the same eye dropper problem. At this point, there seems to be no good solution. It's either inaccuracy of the eye dropper or a lot of squinting.

You can try checking to see if the Windows Compatibility HiDPI scaling override may help?

Exit LR, then in windows File explorer navigate to the location where the “Lightroom.exe” file is located it should be in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Lightroom Classic

Right click and choose properties, select the Compatibility tab then click on

“Change high DPI settings” button

(Make note of the current settings in this dialog box)

Check the High DPI scaling override checkbox and select “Application” in the dropdown.

Open Lightroom and check if it helped?

If it does not help change it back to the original settings.

@AdrianGTx System DPI setting: 240 DPI (high DPI mode)

This indicates that Windows Settings > Display > Scale is set to 250%. In the past, there have been some problems reported with LR’s cursor positioning and disappearing eye dropper when Scale is set larger than 100%:

If updating the GPU driver doesn’t help, then as a next troubleshooting step:

1. Exit LR.

2. Go to Windows Settings > Display.

3. Change Scale to 100%.

4. Start LR. Does the problem go away.

5. Try Scale values of 150% and 200%.

That process was quite interesting, if frustrating. Updating the GPU driver did not do anything. However, decreasing scaling did work. The eyedropper stayed as an eyedropper, not changing to an arrow. Also, the colors shown in the panel did then correspond to the position of the eyedropper. For that, the maximum scaling had to be 200%. However, my laptop recommended 250% scaling for a reason. With its recommended display resolution of 3840 x 2400, objects on the screen are very small with only 200% scaling. I am not sure how to work around this. Any ideas?

@AdrianGTx DirectX: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU (32.0.15.8129)

That graphics driver is 7 months old. It may not be causing this problem, but a first troubleshooting step is always to update to the latest Nvidia Studio driver:

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/265483/

“update to the latest Nvidia driver” =>

“update to the latest Nvidia Studio driver”

Nvidia and Adobe recommend using Nvidia’s Studio drivers, not the Game Ready drivers, which don’t receive as much testing with creative apps like LR.

Why isn’t this showing the ‘eye dropper’ cursor?

Another good question that I hadn’t even thought of.

Please do the LR menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents here so we can see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running and important LR options that are set.

The position of the pointer in Lightroom Classic is not accurate. For example, although I may point the color picker at a particular color, it shows colors that are nearby, but not the ones under the cursor. Any idea why this is happening and how to fix it?

Participating Frequently

No.  200% works but 300% does not. 400% also does not work.  At 200% the cursor shows as an eyedropper and selects the correct color.  Anything above 200% the cursor shows as a standard mouse pointer and selects the wrong color.

I created a color range mask in Lightroom Classic v14.1.1 On Windows 11 Home Edition but when trying to select a color, the actual color selected is below the pointer instead of the tip of the pointer.  I created the attached video to demo it.  Although the tip of the pointer is in the red area, it selects from the green area.  Also I can't click on the handle to move it to the green area because doing so again just re-selects an area below the pointer.

Same thing happens when creating a luminance mask but the other masks (brush, radial gradient) don't exhibit this issue.

Interestingly, I tried creating the demo using the screen recording option in the Snipping Tool but it caused my pointer to change to an eyedropper and was selecting colors/luminance values correctly!  So I recorded the demo on my phone to show the issue.

Here's the system info.  Any help is appreciated.

Hu, that is interesting.

This is just a shot in the dark, but did you enlarge the pointer size, by any chance? I know there are some quirks with larger pointers on macOS but you're on Windows, so that might not be it. Worth taking a look at though?

Why is it that Photoshop can be easily dragged from one monitor to another and rescales normally, and Lightroom produces all kinds of problems in the scaling of the user interface elements and in some places in the positioning of the mouse? The same company develops both products, so the company has the knowledge to develop "High Dpi" compatible software. Note: I use the "Font size: Automatic (default)" setting in Lightroom Classic.
