New Replacement external hard drive

Nouveau ici ,
Sep 14, 2025 Sep 14, 2025

I keep my working photos on an external hard drive in a folder labled photos.  Recently the connector failed and a technician was able to copy the contents to a new external hard drive.  Lightroom is able to see the new external hard drive, but Im unable to see the folder labled photos.  Therefore, I am unable to see any of my working folders.  FYI, under the photos folder, I have yearly working folders (e.g. 2023, 2024, etc).  Any suggestions?  Also, my computer is a Macbook Pro.

2015.13 release is a predecessor software to the current Lightroom Classic (and was usually called simply "Lightroom" * ) and required a subscription. Since you must still be paying the subscription, you should be using the most current version of Lightroom Classic that your operating system will allow.

As far as you being unable to see the folders in Lightroom 2015.13, you need to re-connect the Library to the actual location of the folders, which is explain here: https://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm

Renaming your new external drive so it has the exact same name as the old one did should solve your problem without any further action (providing the technician managed to preserve your folder hierarchy).

You posted this in the Lightroom ecosystem forum, but are you indeed using Lightroom or Lightroom Classic? Lightroom stores its images online, so this sounds like you are using Lightroom Classic.

Please go to the Help Menu>System Info and tell us the version number that is listed there. We still don't know the actual version that you are using, as the term "Lightroom CC" no longer exists and in the past it was used (at different times) for both types of "Lightroom". So the version number will clear this up.

"Lightroom CC" is an old name, it's now simply called "Lightroom". I assume this means you are using the Local option, because as said the default operation is with images in the cloud. Or you still mean you are using Lightroom Classic...

This applies to both: If you do not see folders at all, then this sounds that Lightroom does not have permissions to read & write to this new external drive. Do the following. Select the drive in the MacOS Finder and type 'i' to get the Info dialog for this drive. Look all the way at the bottom. Do you see an option 'Ignore ownership on this volume'? If you do and the option is not checked, then check it. Does that solve it? If not, maybe you could post a screenshot of the drive Info dialog.

This info suggests you are using a 10 years old version of what is now called Lightroom Classic! Is that really true?

I pay for a monthly subscription and update when updates are offered.  Not sure what else to do about that.

In that case you may have two versions of Lightroom installed; the old 2015.13 version that has no longer been updated for ten years, and Lightroom (desktop), aka the 'other Lightroom'. You duly update Lightroom desktop each time you get an update offer, but what you do not realise is that you are not actually using that version, but are still using the ancient 2015.13 version. Did you ever notice new features after an update?

Is that folder visible when looking at the hard drive on the macOS Finder desktop, without Lightroom running?

If it is, you should be able to reconnect Lightroom to it using Step 1 in the link that dj_paige posted.

If you don’t see it in the Finder desktop, then it might not have been successfully recovered from the old hard drive.

But first, try JohanElzenga‘s suggestion to make sure the name of the replacement hard drive is exactly the same as the old one, because Lightroom tracks image locations by their folder paths, including the volume name.

OK, renamed the hard drive to the old name and re-connected the Library.  This worked!  Now just need to figure out why my subscription is still allowing me to use outdated software.

It should allow you to use the most recent version of the Lightroom you know, but -as explained- that version is not called 'Lightroom' or 'Lightroom CC', but Lightroom Classic. So install Lightroom Classic, open your catalog with it, allow Lightroom Classic to upgrade your catalog (it will make an upgrade copy) and then you should have all the new features you've been paying for the last ten years.

So within my account I have three choices: Lightroom Classic (6.0), Lightroom Classic (13.5.1) and Lightroom (appears to be cloud based).  I'm currently using 6.0.  When I open 13.5.1, I get a message that states Lightroom catalog was not found; choose a different or create a new one.  The 13.5.1 has updates available, but it states my computer is not compatable.  Guess my computer is too old and I should be looking at upgrading.

LA PLUS RÉCENTE

Your OS is too old. Your computer might still support a newer version of MacOS, in which case you might be able to get Lightroom Classic 14. But even starting with Lightroom Classic 13 will already give you a wealth of new features compared to Lightroom 6/2015.

When Lightroom Classic says the catalog is not found, select 'choose a different catalog' and then select your existing catalog. Lightroom Classic will update (a copy of) it and then you can use your existing catalog in this version.

It’s because you’re allowed to keep old versions in case they’re needed for reasons such as maintaining compatibility with an older plug-in. When you use the Adobe Creative Cloud installer to install a major upgrade, there’s an option for whether you want to remove old versions. Some people tell the installer not to remove old versions when upgrading, so the old versions stay and can still be used.

If an older version is still installed and you’re sure you no longer need it, you can use the Creative Cloud desktop app to remove an old version. For older versions that option might not be available, but if there is a folder for that old version in your Mac’s Applications folder, there might be an uninstall shortcut in there.
