I'm having problems with my primary catalogue, so I'm importing it into a new catalogue to troubleshoot and see if the issues will go away. However, it's already taking over an hr to import, even with virtual copies.
I think I'll be better off trying other ideas due to a deadline, and would think that cancelling this shouldn't affect the catalogue being important in any negative way, but wanted to check in first. Should I let this run its course, or can I cancel without fear?
I don't care about the new catalogue I just made.
Thanks!
Cancelling the Import will not affect the source catalog in any way, so as you have found out, it is safe to cancel the Import.
As for VC's in the catalog, VC photos are essentially no different to Master photos. The catalog record for a Master and the catalog records for its VC's are practically identical. The only difference is that VC's have an entry linking them to their respective Master. In all other respects, they are the same.

An hour is way too long.
Why don't you describe the problem you are trying to troubleshoot? Instead of picking a solution which may not be a solution and asking about that.

It's a big catalogue and it does appear to be inching along > 160,000 photo of approx 500,000 imported (it's showing).
I'm still trying to figure out the larger issue, just posted here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/odd-lr-classic-bug-freezes-after-a-few-clicks-...
Let me know if there's anything else I can share. Thanks for your time!

To your knowledge, any reason why I should worry about the catalogue being imported if I decide to cancel the import?

I cancelled the import and didn't seem to cause any further issues.
