Hello,
I recently had a call with Adobe support with no luck. I have found some threads on this but nothing presents a solution and it seems hard to find what the actual issue is.
If I edit a client gallery and use any healing brush tool or AI masking tool, the mask or healing brush/generative AI will get a red dot underneath after going back to the start of the gallery, my AI edits are gone....
I also noticed this happens 100% of the time when I quite and reopen lightroom, I can fix the mask, update ai settings but it just resets each time I open lightroom.
We tested a new catalogue, we tested a bunch of things with no luck.
We really need a fix on this Adobe it is killing workflow, not sure what broke this setting. I can't revert to an old version because I have lots of photos (I do 1 catalogue per year) and can't go back weeks of client work.
Also this catalogue was started at the begining of 2025 so there is no version 13 of this catalogue to revert to and test.
PLEASE HELP ADOBE!
It has been reported that one cause of this issue is the use of the Imagen AI Plugin.
@johnrellis has provided two workarounds in his post in this thread.

Hello Aleke,
thank you for youre help. Today i updated all (Photoshop, Lightroom, Camera Raw). I use Apple Imac. There was no a problem with the mask, just today. In all of my old galeries, Lightromm wants, that i update the KI masks. I never had a problem with that before. Now in all old galeries is that the problem.
Greetings

Hallo Caro,
Danke Dir.
Liebe Grüße
Stefanie

Quick note: before trying the solution below, it would be super helpful if you could send us your catalog so we can do some testing on our end. Feel free to DM me. Thanks a bunch!
Hi @Carolin27339437zokw and @stefanieh54261563!
Sorry to hear about the issues you're having with AI masks.
Lightroom Classic stores AI masks and Generative Remove patches in the 'Catalogname.lrcat-data' file. Sometimes, this file can get corrupted or have incorrect preferences, causing masks to need constant updates.
To test this, move the file out of your catalog folder and start Lightroom Classic. You'll see a dialog about the missing data; just click 'Continue'. Lightroom Classic will recreate the file. Now, try updating one of the masks and see if it sticks this time. If it does, you'll need to update all your masks, but hopefully only this one last time.
Good luck! Let me know if this helps.
Alek

Dear Aleke,
Is there any information on mass updating AI information in images? At the moment I have to update each image individually and in some folders a lot of images cannot be restored by a new Ircat file.

Hi @Flamboyant_Sunrise16B8! 😊
Sorry for the late reply — I didn’t get a notification for your message.
To update all your AI masks at once, just head over to the Library Grid view, select all your photos, and then go to Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings in the top menu. That’ll trigger a recompute of all the AI masks. Just a heads-up: it might take a bit of time to finish depending on how many photos you have.
Let me know if you run into any issues!
Cheers,
Alek

That batch update does not work for me. I have to do all individually. When I try to do it in the grid view, it starts the process, then I get an error.

Hallo zusammen,

Same, just suddenly in the last couple weeks out of nowhere and it is killing my workflow. I may just stop using AI adjustments here because it is pointless until this is fixed.

(Beware: I am FRUSTRATED by this bug!)
Whenever I use generative remove or an AI mask the changes are NOT saved into the file and vanish when I switch to a new image or to the library module. I have to re-generate it each time.
I came across this when I tried to export directly into my online gallery and realised that my edits are not included.
I tried to delete cache catalogues etc. to no avail.
The only way to implement generative remove is to export directly after making the changes.
Plase fix this!

Exactly the same problem. I've tried a lot of things and every solutions were just a huge waste of time. Maybe they was not ready to make this new feature.

@Aleke I am having the same issues as the people above with using LrC starting yesterday. I all of a sudden need to regenerate all masks in each photo then they disappear when you move to next photo and try to come back. Do you have a solution for this? Unable to work because of it, big problem. Thank you

@Aleke i was able to use your steps above to resolve the issue.
to follow up though... should I leave the file on the desktop now that it is resolved? Or can I move the file back to the original file location?
also, I am seeing from other threads that this fixed the masking issue then the issue returned- moving forward would I need to create a new catalog if this issue persists or any other advice if the problem returns?
thank you

Hi @LindseyS918! So glad to hear the issue is resolved for you.
You can go ahead and keep that file in a secure location as a backup, no need to move it back. Since Lightroom Classic rebuilt it after you moved it, everything should be good to go from here.
That said, the issue could pop up again for a few different reasons, like hardware problems, power outages, crashes while Lightroom is writing to the file, or if your catalog is stored on a NAS or cloud service.
If you start seeing this happen more often, it might be worth considering creating a new catalog just to be safe. Hopefully it won’t come to that, but feel free to reach out if anything else comes up!
Thanks again,
Alek
