P: Colored "pixel" artifacts/subdued blacks in shadow areas (older Macs) (also visible on CR)

I updated LrC to 12.4 yesyerday. Since then a number of pixels in multiple colors appear appear quite often on the image, mostly in the areas of blacks/darks and when using Tone Curve commands. It's similar to the red/blue pixels which denoted clipping in the areas of blacks/whites, but they appear in very many different other colors. Sometimes they disappear, or decrease, after actioning the commands again, sometimes they do not. Is anybody else facing the same problem which I encounter now for the vey first time after many years of use of LrC? Thank you in advance for your advise.

Summary:

We can still not replicate this failure on test or production machines at Adobe. This appears to occur on Lightroom 12.4/Camera Raw 15.4 and later on very old Macs (8 Years and older) and is likely due to out-of-date video drivers on no longer-supported or updated GPUs.

The issue manifests as visual color artifacts in the Develop view only but doesn't always appear on exported images. It can also manifest as less-than-black deep shadow areas.

_8519144.jpg, it records them in tif with all the lights, both high and low, does anyone know how to solve this problem.

The only thing I can do is close Lightroom and reopen it but after several images the problem appears again.

I'm working on an Imac, macOS Montery Version 12.7.2

Please help, I have a lot of work editing images and this is extremely late.

I leave a sample image.

I don't understand this part: "it records them in tif with all the lights, both high and low". Please explain in mroe detail. What does the photo you show have to do with this?

Also, what software are you using? Lightroom (Lr icon) or Lightroom Classic (Lrc icon)? What version NUMBER?

On every image, you have to go to CALIBRATION, and change it to Version $
from Version 6. This world but you have to do it for each image which is
so frustrating and time consuming.

For those using LR 13, LR 13.1 fixes the bug with disabling use of the GPU for export. So setting Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor to Off should work around the problem of artifacts in exported images. Whether that results in a noticeable slowth in performance will depend on how old your Mac is and which graphics processor you have.

2013 Mac Pro and Lightroom Classic V13.

Not always it seems. Disabling GPU use fixed the colour effects in Develop Mode but I've still had occasional issues with shadow problems in Export but not when opening from Lightroom into Photoshop. The worst of it is it's not consistent.

@DH-art: "13.1 not showing in Adobe updates."

Sometimes the Creative Cloud desktop app is slow in recognizing updates.

1. Start the Creative Cloud desktop app.

2. Click the Apps icon in the left column.

3. Click Updates in the second column.

4. Click Check For Updates in the upper-right corner.

5. If you still don't see Lightroom Classic 13.1, click your Id avatar in the upper-right corner and sign out. Then sign in again and repeat steps 2 - 4.

When I installed the new software it asked me to turn on GPU and I did.   When I went into LR all the weird coloring problems were there still.   So turned off the GPU setting again.

LR 13.1 didn't address the underlying issue with the old graphics drivers. But it did fix Export to obey the setting of Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor, so that as a workaround, you can leave the GPU disabled and exports should not have any artifacts.

In the past month or so all the photos I export from Lightroom have had these blotchy portions in the darkest shadows in the image. Help!! I love editing my photos with deep shadows, so this is killing me.

They don't look like this when I view them in LR, only when exported. I've turned the graphics processor off, and that hasn't helped.

I hadn't used Lightroom classic on my computer in a while. I imported some images from a friends wedding this week and it's like the photo data is missing when I go to edit them! The shadows are completely clipped to grey with no usable pixels.

First image below is what the raw image  look like in the "Library" mode in LR - (exposed for highlights with plenty of room to boost the shadows), but then the second one (the messed up one) is what it looks like in "Develop" mode - shadows are just a flat grey blob with no pixels.

  • Images from Sony a7RII shot in raw.
  • Imported into the latest version of Lightroom Classic
  • MacOS 12.7.
  • (on a 2015 pro — can't upgrade past Monterey, and I'm hoping that's not the root issue here. Photoshot gives me an error message when I open it saying I'm on an incompatible OS, but LR hasn't shown me that error.)

A screen shot of your develop module, complete with history panel, the  histogram and at least the Basic Panel are viewable would be better. Oh and make sure that in the filmstrip or in the loupe view that the file name is shown.
