P: Colored "pixel" artifacts/subdued blacks in shadow areas (older Macs) (also visible on CR)

I updated LrC to 12.4 yesyerday. Since then a number of pixels in multiple colors appear appear quite often on the image, mostly in the areas of blacks/darks and when using Tone Curve commands. It's similar to the red/blue pixels which denoted clipping in the areas of blacks/whites, but they appear in very many different other colors. Sometimes they disappear, or decrease, after actioning the commands again, sometimes they do not. Is anybody else facing the same problem which I encounter now for the vey first time after many years of use of LrC? Thank you in advance for your advise.

Summary:

We can still not replicate this failure on test or production machines at Adobe. This appears to occur on Lightroom 12.4/Camera Raw 15.4 and later on very old Macs (8 Years and older) and is likely due to out-of-date video drivers on no longer-supported or updated GPUs.

The issue manifests as visual color artifacts in the Develop view only but doesn't always appear on exported images. It can also manifest as less-than-black deep shadow areas.

 Is your monitor calibrated, and when was the last time you updated that?

 

Small differences between Library and Develop are expected, large differences, like the Grooms coat are not. Often a calibration issue when you see large differences. hmm, but I suspect it is usually the other way around, library looking bad. And usually when you post examples, the members do not see any obvious differences, whereas yep, ugly shadows.

 

Hmm, what is the LrC version? If v13.2, then my poor hunch is invalid, and I suspect as you are not on an M1, M2 MAC, not the issue. but??

You've got an old graphics processor whose driver is no longer supported by the manufacturer, and LR is tripping over bugs in the driver.  Two workarounds:

 

- Ensure you're running LR 13.1, and set Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor to Off.

 

- Roll back to LR 12.3.

Unfortunately you are probably indeed on one of the affected machines this thread your question got moved to is on. You can try one of the solutions (turning off gpu acceleration, reinstalling Lightroom 12, using an older process version) in the thread here until there is a fix. It is not clear whether there will ever be a fix though as apparently it has to do with an incompatibility in the driver for the gpu (supplied by Apple) with the raw code as implemented now. Classic v12 should work normally though.

I have an Intel iMac running Mac OS Monyterey 12.7.2. When I'm editing photos I'm having display issues. Here is what those issues look like:

The bright colours make it impossible to edit a photograph and the colours come and go and appear in different areas of the image depending on the editing I'm doing. I have done hardware tests on my Mac but everything tests okay. Any ideas or help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

@rldp, do Help > System Info to verify you're running LR 13.1. If you're not, do Help > Updates.

 

Then set Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor to Off.

I have a MacbookPro 2015 and the latest lightroom classic, and I have a rendering problem in the dark areas of the images (only in the development module). Previous versions did not do this. I don't understand, someone help me? I have attached a picture of the problem.

This is only happening on older Macs - I have a late edition 2015 which runs perfectly.  I tried all possible solutions mentioned re GPU & reinstalling older versions of LR.  They don't work.  I somehow came upon a solution that works for me.  I was desperate during holiday card season - I do tons of holiday card family sessions so I kept playing around.  After fully editing the image, go to CALBIBRATION.  Default is Version 6.  Chnage it to Version 4 and all issues will diappear.  If you go back and change anything, the calibration will revert to Version 6 & you will need to change to Version 4 yet again.  This is time consuming and so frustrating being that this is a service I am paying for.  We need Adobe to step in and fix this bug for the older Macs that still work great!

@Lisa4BOYS, the inconvenient version 4 workaround is confirmed in Adobe's pinned reply and others in this thread -- glad it's working for you.

 

Verify that you actually have LR 13.1 installed by doing Help > System Info. Many have reported that setting Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor to Off works around the issue in LR 13.1.

This doesn't address the fact that as Lisa says this is a service that we are paying for.  As we are essentially leasing the software we are not getting value for money, and this could have been discovered with proper regression testing on very common devices used with Lightroom.  Adobe really need to acknowledge that this is a big problem for some of their customers, who will have spent a lot of money with them over the years, and either:

 

- Confirm they will not resolve it and offer those affected a single purchase opt out of leasing (discounted due to ongoing frustrations) of the last good release

- Resolve the issue, and refund some of the costs to those impacted

 

It's really not on that there are no updates coming out, no formal statement, just monthly collecting our money.  I am trying to complete a wedding shoot I did for a friend covering hundreds of photos and it's dragging on because of this.  It was supposed to be their wedding present

Hey David and all,

I can only support this statements. Herewith the copies from the actual website from ADOBE LIGHTROOM SPEIFICATION REQUIREMENTS.

Would be really great when ADOBE will finally keep themself promises for specification requirements.

We are paying a monthy fee since years, but recent steps in application software developments from ADOBE have been really very bad with respect to failure testing. Lots of community people can test bad performance and O N L Y  Adobe is not capable to react on.

Nice, if you are working only on newest computer equipement, but in this case you have to tell your users : sorry, if you are not using the newest computers, please step back to the previous version and pay for the rest of your life with ADOBE LIGHTROOM the fee, without having any benefits anymore.

ADOBE : Your old fellows are waiting for reaction with a good offer.

Thxs for this in advance and I strongly believe this will and has to come.

Before we can suggest a likely workaround, please do the LR menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents here so we can see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running and important LR options that are set.

 

Also, click the Apple icon in the upper-left corner and do About This Mac. Post a full-resolution screenshot (not a phone pic) of the About window.

You're on a Mac with an 8-year-old graphics processor whose driver is no longer supported by the manufacturer Radeon. LR is very sensitive to bugs in graphics drivers, and unfortunately, there isn't any indication Radeon and Apple intend to provide an updated driver.  You've got several workarounds:

 

1. Update to LR 13.1 and set Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor to Off. Most people with this issue report that works for them. (It won't work on 13.0 through 13.0.1).

 

2. Use Process Version 4 rather than Process Version 6 in the Calibration panel in Develop. That's inconvenient because LR keeps updating the process version to 6 automatically, so have to remember to set it back.

 

3. Roll back to LR 12.3, which could be painful if you've already done lots of edits with LR 13.

I am not sure how it keeps on happening, but about a year ago I started getting this bug with lightroom where it randomly pops up this yellow highlight as seen in the attached screenshot. It seems to go away when I bring my blacks up. I have the J key toggled off. I've pressed every button on my keyboard and it still won't go away. I don't toggle it on because it just randomly starts happening, however, I cant figure out a fix. Any suggestions?

Avec Lightroom
classic, je traite mes photos en raw sur un Imac 27 pouces calibré avec le logiciel interne du Mac. Sur Lightroom, l'écrêtage est activé pour rectifier éventuellement les noirs et les hautes Lumières. Mais je constate après exportation quand je regarde les photos sur mon autre PC Windows que l'on peut voir des tâches comme si les noirs n'étaient pas bien réglés ou parfois les hautes lumières. Je n'ai pas ce problème si je regarde mes photos sur le Mac.
