P: Generative Remove Feedback (Lr Classic & Lr Eco)

This post applies to Lightroom Classic and the Lightroom Ecosystem products.
Camera Raw feedback can be found here.

Generative Remove makes it easier to remove unwanted objects and distractions with a simple gesture, even on complex backgrounds. For more accurate results, be sure to include the object's shadow in your selection and/or expand its size.

Detect Objects uses AI to find the objects underneath a brushed area. The masked areas will now appear larger than the Early Access version of this feature. You can also circle objects for quicker selection now.

We have also updated the spot selection experience to make it easier to manage variations, switch the fill type, refine the selection area, or re-generate as needed.

Batch updating is also now supported for Generative Remove spots.

Try out the latest updates and share your feedback with us here. Please also include the following details in your post:
  • App version
  • System details
  • Example image(s) if you wish to share

Our team continually monitors this thread to track issues for future improvement. Thanks!

I am struggling to remove unwanted objects from my images and thought that Generative Remove would be the answer. Specifically I want to get rid of power lines against a sky background and electricity pylons against a mountain backdrop. Am getting some pretty weird results where I would have thought that it would have been a pretty simple operation. It's possible that I am using the incorrect tools within the Adobe suite? Any help would be gratefully received.

Please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo (not a screenshot), so we and Adobe can see the issue in detail. With nearly everyone who has posted a problem photo, we've been able to show how to quickly remove the desired objects.

Hi John, I've taken the liberty of cropping the image as it would be outside of your upload parameters.

@johns9744233, with the JPEG you uploaded, I was able to quickly remove the transmission towers and cables:

JohnREllis_0-1731280355831.png

I removed each tower first, then each cable separately. If two cables touched, I selected both cables, since otherwise Remove might try to match the remaining unselected bit.  I turned off Detect Objects, which is usually more trouble than it's worth, especially with skinny objects and objects on the edge

Here are two of the selections I made:

JohnREllis_2-1731280583262.png

JohnREllis_6-1731280661890.png

If you have problems with objects touching the edges of the photo, you need to undo any Crop, Lens Correction, or Transform, apply the Remove, then redo those settings.

Also, see this article for how to remove objects more reliably:
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/generative-remove-replace/

Most complaints about Remove are addressed in the article. But if that doesn't help, upload the original, unmodified photo to Dropbox, Google Drive, or similar and post the sharing link here, so we can see in detail what might be going wrong.

Go back to the original without cropping, straightening, or editing. Then try it. It will work almost always. Do any editing or manipulations after erasing.

I worked on the original raw image as a first edit as recommended in the prior posts. Whilst the original pylon disappears what is left in its place is a blurred section of mountains and some water. I attach the result which has been cropped so that you can the result clearly. But I stress that no image manipulation was carried out prior to this.

It's hard to say what's going wrong for you without seeing the original unmodified photo -- share it via any of the free options of Wetransfer, Dropbox, Google Drive, Onedrive, etc.

It feels like the earlier trial version of the Remove tool was better than the updated version, it doesn't seem to recognise the object I'm trying to remove and just presents a slightly different version of it. Previously it would be able to pick up that I was selecting out say a railing against a green bush backdrop and replace it with the green foliage, now it just reconfigures the bar. Am I missing something?

Uncheck the option Detect Objects and then select the object you want removed. Detect Objects is on by default in LR 14, and it often doesn't work well.

Thank you that's a really helpful sheet. I've just tried it and it seems to work better, think I wasn't selecting a big enough area around the object to remove. Many thanks for your help

@melaniem37974764, once you get a hang of the simple techniques in that article, it becomes quite quick to remove most objects (though Remove is far from perfect).

Bottom line... The AI removal tool is beyond incredible. It literally can save a photo! It works without issue about 99% of the time. Well done people!

Please bring back the option to toggle between photos when the remove tool is clicked and ther is nothing selected. It takes away from editing speed.

Hold Alt/Option modifier and use arrow left/right to move the next or previous image when either Remove Panel or Masking Panel is open.

@brandoncharles991,:

You also have to use Alt/Opt Left/Right when other panels are active: Crop, Red Eye, White Balance, Tone Curve.

@Min E: "Lr cannot remove this simple distracting light on the edge of the frame."

Remove quickly removed it from your screenshot:

JohnREllis_0-1731430400350.png

1. Uncheck Detect Objects before selecting the object. It doesn't work very well, especially with objects near an edge of the photo.

2. If you've applied Crop, Transform, or Lens Corrections, temporarily undo them, do the Remove, then reapply them. Remove tries to match the unselected, cropped-out pixels.

3. If you haven't applied one of those cropping commands and you're editing a raw, let us know the precise make and model of the camera and I can provide a simple technique.

I tried to remove some electricity lines, but LR went quite bezerk. I selected with shift and select, but it did not select the line, but something in between (line nothing line nothing). the resulting removl did not take place, as it should.

Maybe a different department, but if i try to remove the lines 'normally' a white line remains. I expected a blue sky, like you get when removing a spot. The blacker/darker the spot or line the whiter the resulting spot/line becomes.

It sounds like you've got Detect Objects selected. Uncheck it -- it doesn't work well, especially with skinny objects and near the photo edges.

"if i try to remove the lines 'normally' a white line remains. I expected a blue sky, like you get when removing a spot."

You're probably applying Remove on top of an AI mask, e.g. a Sky mask. Do Settings > Update AI Settings to recompute the mask.

yes, I probably used a mask.  I didn't know that mattered... I'll check and report back.

It would be cool if there was a one-click option to do AI removal actions that people might typically do. For instance, a button for "remove pedestrians" or "clean up telephone wires."
