P: Generative Remove Feedback (Lr Classic & Lr Eco)

Adobe Employee ,
Aug 13, 2024 Aug 13, 2024
This post applies to Lightroom Classic and the Lightroom Ecosystem products.
Camera Raw feedback can be found here.

Generative Remove makes it easier to remove unwanted objects and distractions with a simple gesture, even on complex backgrounds. For more accurate results, be sure to include the object's shadow in your selection and/or expand its size.

Detect Objects uses AI to find the objects underneath a brushed area. The masked areas will now appear larger than the Early Access version of this feature. You can also circle objects for quicker selection now.

We have also updated the spot selection experience to make it easier to manage variations, switch the fill type, refine the selection area, or re-generate as needed.

Batch updating is also now supported for Generative Remove spots.

Try out the latest updates and share your feedback with us here. Please also include the following details in your post:
  • App version
  • System details
  • Example image(s) if you wish to share

Our team continually monitors this thread to track issues for future improvement. Thanks!

Update (Dec 2024):  With the new release, it is no longer necessary to perform Generative Remove Operations prior to Cropping.

Update (August 2025) With the new release, the Generative Remove Engine has been updated.

The generative remove in the latest release of Lightroom is working well but the user interface

is all over the place. I get half a box showing me the optional results that tries to display before the replace is complete. There is then some screen redrawing on the right panel and focus seems to come and go.

@Pinner Photographer: "the user interface is all over the place. I get half a box showing me the optional results that tries to display before the replace is complete. There is then some screen redrawing on the right panel and focus seems to come and go."

First troubleshooting steps:

1. Restart your computer.

2. Update your graphics driver by going directly to the manufacturer's web site:
https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html#solution-4

3. Reset LR's preferences:
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

LR sometimes soils its preferences file, and resetting it can fix all sorts of wonky behavior. That article explains how to restore the old preferences if resetting doesn't help.

4. Do the LR menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents here so we can see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running and important LR options that are set.

A simple scenario in removing a black cable in front of the sky results in just replacing the black line by a white. Several update cycles could not fix the behaviour. This is very weak. If this was the first version with generative remove OK, but this is not the case anymore.

LR does a good job of removing the wire from your screenshot:

Most likely you've applied Remove on top of a Sky mask. Do Settings > Update AI Settings to recompute the Sky mask. See this short article for Adobe's recommended order in which to apply editing operations:

You are right, after refreshing the mask it works perfectly fine, thank you very much.

Generative Remove Failed: We're experiencing delays due to high demand. Please try again later.  I tried agian multiple times. How can I get around this? I have alot of dust spots to remove from a large timelapse sequence.

Use the Clone or Heal mode for dust spots -- much faster, doesn't use Adobe severs. And just as good.

Content Aware (renamed as Remove) is also good for spots or hot pixels.

For small stuff it works.

@coryp21354218: The three non-generative-AI modes usually do very well with small spots. It would be interesting to see an example where it's failing -- attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo (not a screenshot).

@valentinosh: "i do it to remove a face and in the place it generates new faces...lots of time those stuf doesnt work, creating lots more of work"

If you select a face but leave parts of the body unselected, even parts that are disconnected, Remove will generate a replacement that tries to match that body. Select all of the body along with the face.

See this short article for how to remove objects more reliably:
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/generative-remove-replace/

Most complaints about Remove are addressed in the article. But if it doesn't help, please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo (not a screenshot). With nearly every one of the many dozen problem photos posted here, we've been able to show how to quickly remove the desired objects.

The older Clone, Heal, and Content-Aware modes are still available:

When I use generative fill in LRC it often shows the outline of the area that I selected, leaving a border. I've attached an unmodified jpeg as well as a screenshot of the before and after where you can see the line of the selection.

Often, Remove doesn't match tones well in flat tonal areas, as in your example. Sometimes you can fix that by selecting a larger area:

johnrellis_0-1740876406499.png  johnrellis_1-1740876426234.png

(You can get rid of the newly added wall outlet with a second application of Remove.)

Other techniques for ameliorating a tone mismatch: make the selection more raggedy; use short strokes with the Heal tool around the boundary to get better feathering; use the Brush mask and set Texture, Clarity, and Sharpness low to blur the area.

Hi, I am trying to understand why my generative remove attempts are sometimes very blurry compared to the rest of the photo, even with small patches. It was the case in all my session yesterday. For some reason, today, simply regenerating the same spots gives better results (but still blurry). I have the feeling Photoshop does better here, at least, is more consistent.
My photos are not high resolution (only 12MP DNG from a Pixel 6a)...

Generative AI Remove often doesn't match the surrounding noise/grain with replacement patches.  Sometimes running Denoise first significantly improves the match.  If that doesn't help, please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo (not a screenshot) and attach a screenshot showing what you've selected for Remove. That will let us see more precisely what the issue might be.

"I have the feeling Photoshop does better here, at least, is more consistent."

PS and LR use the same Adobe Firefly Generative AI Remove, though their user interfaces are different, and they have different other remove modes (e.g. Heal, Clone, and Content-Aware in LR). So when comparing Generative Remove in the two apps, in LR make sure you've got Remove mode selected with Use Generative AI selected:

johnrellis_1-1741116475518.png

and in PS make sure Mode: Generative AI On is selected:

johnrellis_0-1741116326552.png

If you encounter an example where Generative Remove behaves differently in the two apps, it would be good to post an example here (with unmodified, full-resolution JPEGs).  To date, no one has posted an example where the two apps differ.

Well, I am realizing that in PS I was not using the "remove tool" from Camera Raw, but the "generative fill" floating windows, and I simply enter nothing, so basically it removes my selection.
So in the end, in PS I was not doing the modification on the DNG file, but on a "flatten/exported" version of it, after Camera Raw has done its work. This could explain the small differences I noticed!

I tried to remove a tree on the right side. The generative remove yields unusable results: the sky is completely off. Any idea how to fix this?
Much appreciated!

Did you use a sky mask? If so, you must update that mask. Another thought: This kind of removal might work better with the normal remove tool, rather than generative remove tool.

I did not use any masking.
The regular remove tool gives me trippy results because the tree is on the border of the frame.

Isn't this a setting/color space thing? This is a 3984x5976 DNG file

Thanks Johan!

Disable any cropping and disable lens corrections, then try the regular remove tool again. I have seen these color problems with generative remove in a gradient too. I don't think it's a color space thing, but just a limitation of the technology.
