P: Generative Remove Feedback (Lr Classic & Lr Eco)

Adobe Employee ,
Aug 13, 2024 Aug 13, 2024
This post applies to Lightroom Classic and the Lightroom Ecosystem products.
Camera Raw feedback can be found here.

Generative Remove makes it easier to remove unwanted objects and distractions with a simple gesture, even on complex backgrounds. For more accurate results, be sure to include the object's shadow in your selection and/or expand its size.

Detect Objects uses AI to find the objects underneath a brushed area. The masked areas will now appear larger than the Early Access version of this feature. You can also circle objects for quicker selection now.

We have also updated the spot selection experience to make it easier to manage variations, switch the fill type, refine the selection area, or re-generate as needed.

Batch updating is also now supported for Generative Remove spots.

Try out the latest updates and share your feedback with us here. Please also include the following details in your post:
  • App version
  • System details
  • Example image(s) if you wish to share

Our team continually monitors this thread to track issues for future improvement. Thanks!

Update (Dec 2024):  With the new release, it is no longer necessary to perform Generative Remove Operations prior to Cropping.

Update (August 2025) With the new release, the Generative Remove Engine has been updated.

@CarlyHill96: "What do I do when I have zero masks though?"

Regarding that last problem image you posted:

johnrellis_0-1749919180532.png

As I explained in my previous reply, that's caused by a deficiency in the Remove algorithm that many have complained about, not by applying Remove on top of masking. The reply explains some ways that you can often ameliorate the problem:

I am confused, is this not a space to leave feedback for Adobe to work on fixing this issue? I am both happy to hear I am not alone in these struggles, but sad to hear "many have complained about this", if *many* have complained will something be done to fix this issue?

1. Adobe recommends applying Denoise before Remove. This can reduce the noise, making it more likely the replacement will match.
- I already applied as much denoise as I can without disliking the effect it has on the image.

2. The replacement patch supplied by Adobe Firefly has a maximum size of 2048 x 2048 pixels. If the selected area in the photo is larger than that, then the replacement patch gets upscaled (and blurry). Try removing smaller selections if possible.
3. Conversely, try making a larger selection, even including the entire background. Upscaling of the replacement sometimes won't be noticeable then.
- I have tried to do smaller sections, or larger sections, the issue it is seems to just randomly decide when it will stop working on an entire image. No matter the size.

4. Sometimes there's a distinctly visible boundary where the tone or noise don't match. You can often use the heal tool around the boundary to get better feathering and make it less noticeable -- apply Heal in small brush strokes. Or use a Brush mask with maximum feathering, dropping local Texture, Clarity, and Sharpness to their minimum values. Sometimes, making a very raggedy selection around the object makes the boundary less noticeable.
- It is faster to go into photoshop and remove it myself at this point, this does not help solve the issue itself.

5. For grain/noise in particular, see this post for how to ameliorate the problem by adding the grain back or reducing the grain:
- Again, I feel like it is much easier, faster, and quickier, to simply bring the image into photoshop to remove objects instead.

@CarlyHill96: "I am confused, is this not a space to leave feedback for Adobe to work on fixing this issue?"

It is indeed where Adobe wants feedback on Generative Remove provided. They do read this thread but rarely respond (as they infrequently respond to feedback and bug reports on other issues reported in this forum).  So I try to respond with up-to-date information and workarounds for known issues.

Ohh I understand, I completely misunderstood and thought that you were WITH Adobe and this was the solution Adobe was providing me. I really appreciate you responding and providing solutions!! I do just use photoshop when it fails to work, but after a year of doing this I figured I would finally send feedback into adobe. Hoping they can fix these problems soon 😄 Thanks again

The update seems to be buggy, finding that instead of removing objects it now replaces them with random things, and no option just takes it away like it used to. Very frustrating.

There's been no change to Generative AI Remove since it was released in LR 14.0.

See this short article for how to remove objects more reliably:
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/generative-remove-replace/

Most complaints about Remove are addressed in the article. But if it doesn't help, please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo (not a screenshot). With nearly every one of the many dozen problem photos posted here, we've been able to show how to quickly remove the desired objects.

Uncheck Detect Objects before brushing a selection -- it doesn't work well, especially with skinny objects and along the edges of photos.

These ghosts of the removed object are typically caused by applying Remove on top of AI masks (e.g. a Sky mask). Recompute the AI mask by doing Settings > Update AI Settings.

Prior to LR 14.4, the need to update AI settings was indicated with a red dot next to the various tool icons. Starting with 14.4, it's indicated by the single orange button, which you can click to see what needs updating:

Updating ALL Ai Settings can be done in headless mode.

Hold Shift modifier and click on "Ai Edits" icon when yellow.

The Ai Edits panel also allows to directly navigate to the relative Ai Edits apllied simply by clicking on their icon

It is to be considered more of an Ai Hub as it also shows exacttly, top to bottom, the order dependency of Ai Edits.

@vincenzo_9135,

LR's English translation of that error is:

"$$$/Clio/StatusCode/HTTP/Forbidden=We've encountered an issue and can't complete your request at this time. Please try again later."

This error message indicates Remove's network request was blocked for some reason. Sometimes firewalls and anti-virus/security services incorrectly block some network requests from LR. Try these troubleshooting steps:

- Temporarily disable all the firewall/anti-virus/security services on your computer. If that solves the problem, then add a specific exclusion for LR to the services rules.

- Connect to another network, preferably one serviced by a different ISP. E.g. a Wifi connection of a neighbor, a coffee shop, work, or your phone's hotspot. Sometimes the routers in these networks block LR's requests, especially in authoritarian countries like China.

To help others, please let us know which of these work and which don't.

I love that it's called generative remove but all it seems to do is add random stuff. Just tried removing some people from the background of a first dance in the desert and it hadded and white taxi, the back half of a motorcycle, and more people...Love that I have to use credits for crap results.

Most likely, you didn't select the shadows cast by those objects, so the AI generated something that would match the shadows. For example, when I select just the white car but not all of its shadow, it generates another object:

johnrellis_0-1750289484329.png

But when I select the shadow too, it does a quick and good job of removing the car:

Sometimes I wish you'd just leave stuff alone or proof it out better before releasing it. Last week my Removal tool worked beautifully, today, after the update, it doesn't remove what I want it to remove, it replaces it with some other random object and then I have to remove the random object to get it to look how I want. I want my old version back.

You can have your old version back.  Open the Creative Cloud Desktop app, click Apps, click the three dots next to Lightroom Classic, click Other versions and install any of the previous versions you want from the list.

Nothing has changed in Generative AI Remove since it was released from beta in LR 14.0 last fall. Further, since the core of the AI algorithm runs on Adobe's Firefly servers, rolling back to a previous version of LR (e.g. to 14.3) wouldn't change anything.

You've probably encountered a different scenario that requires using the tool in a way you're not used to. For example, there may be a subtle reflection or shadow that you haven't selected and thus Remove is trying to match with its replacement.
