Post Camera Raw feedback here

This thread is now closed. Please update to LrC 14.x or LrD 8.x. If you wish to provide feedback, please go to the new article.

The Lightroom team is sharing an early look at Generative Remove, which makes it easier to remove unwanted objects and distractions, even on complex backgrounds, with a simple brush stroke. Generative Remove is powered by Firefly AI.

How to use Generative Remove on a desktop:

  • You can find Generative Remove under the newly renamed Remove panel (aka “Heal”).
  • Make sure the “generative AI” checkbox is enabled before you start brushing (note: when unchecked, Lightroom will use Content-Aware Remove to fill your brushed spots).
  • By default, you will be given a moment to refine your selection with an add or subtract brush. Remember to include shadows for a more accurate result! You can also skip this step by holding down ‘CTRL’ on windows or ‘CMD’ on mac as you finish your brush stroke.
  • Once you’re ready to apply and have accepted the terms, Generative Remove will use Firefly AI to remove your distractions and intelligently fill in the space that’s left by the removed objects.
  • Note: stable internet connection is required to use this feature.
  • Generative Remove also lets you choose from multiple variations, so you can pick the one you like best, giving you full creative control.

Checkout the FAQ and Best Practices

Please give it a try and share feedback and/or report variations in this community forum. It would greatly help to include details like which app you are using (i.e., Lightroom Classic or Camera Raw) and other system details. Our team will continually monitor this thread to track issues to improve the future experience.

Update:
Here are some tips if you are having issues with the feature replacing your object instead of removing it.
  • Enlarge your selection - if your brush stroke is too tight, you will have unexpected results.
  • Remember that removing an object means painting over it, its shadow, its reflection, and any non-contiguous pieces. If you leave behind a shadow, a reflection, or a disconnected piece (e.g., a hand on a shoulder), the AI will attempt to create something to cast the shadow, reflect, or complete the unbrushed discontinuous item. You can avoid these issue by following the guidance provided in this linked tutorial. https://www.lightroomqueen.com/generative-remove-replace

The recommended order for applying edits is:

  1. Denoise
  2. Heal (includes Generative AI Remove)
  3. Crop (includes traditional Cropping, Lens Correction, Transform, or any operation changing the geometry of the image, including round-tripping to PS to use Gen-Expand)
  4. Global Edits
  5. AI Selective edits (Sky, Person, etc)

If you deviate from that, you may see the removed object remain as a ghost image. If this occurs, you will have to use Update AI Settings, which can be found under the Develop module 'Settings' menu.

In 4 simple clicks: #1 photo, #2 in pull down edit in photo shop, #3 eraser tool in photo shop #4 remove tool.  Mask area/subject sit back and wait a few seconds ... under file click save and photo reruns to LRC.

until LRC develops a feature as easy and simple why mess with an app that is less efficient?

@Robert31242774biba: "until LRC develops a feature as easy and simple why mess with an app that is less efficient?"

1. The current beta implementation is easy and efficient for a large number of people posting here. The beta implementation does have some rough edges that are usually quick and easy to avoid once you take a few minutes to learn about them.

2. There are many examples posted here where LR Remove does a good job and Photoshop doesn't. e.g.

I retract my criticism.  I got it to work perfectly by adjusting the opacity slider to 100%.  Did a great job of removing a large fence/barrier pole in an old picture of a formula one racing car at the Indy Motor Speedway..  I compared it to an identical removal on the Same picture using the photo shop removal tool.  No difference.  Good job Adobe.  My only citicism/suggestion is that the tool should have automatically done/performed the opacity correction.  Good job Adobe.

John feel free to replace this post .

Glad you resolved the issue with Opacity getting set to 1. There have been a few reports about that here, clearly an issue with the Remove beta user interface.

Have had issues with Generative AI selecting an area outside the photo, leading to either no replacement, or a gray patch over the selected area. When trying to select a corner that has vignetting from a filter that gets in the way (Yes I have tried all of the "Ultra Thin" filters, this lens always gives a vignette with any filter on it.), the results are minimal or LR selects an area outside the box as described above. Cannot move the selection inside to the actual photo, and switching to another form of Remove yields the same results. Have to delete the selection and reselect with the new tool.

Can you please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the original unmodified photo, along with a full-resolution screenshot (not a phone pic) showing the gray patch?

I am assuming that this forum is where the Devs want us to comment on where things didn't work as desired. In no way am i trying to come across as some Guru. I did steps 1-4 of your suggestion somewhat naturally, but I don't know what "5. AI selective edits" means.

-Opinion- So I have found that treating an area of my photo with this tool works best when only dotting the removal. Which is the preferred method when dealing with skin blemishes in my opinion. -Bad- I noticed when I use the tool in a brushing movement, for things like the exccessive amount of wrinkle line in the neck as the model is rotating their head to look beyond their shoulder, it seems like it is just using the cloning brush. I notice the corrections the most when I use my zoom function to check how sharp my picture is. I have tried large brush stroke, tight brush stroke, tried short brush strokes. I only tried to remove one wrinkle line at a time. And I wasn't removing all the wrinkles, just the excessive ones so deviation of my shadows stepped down nicely from one wrinkle line to the next. So after all those different methods, brushing the removal tool is not ideal.

-Great- So dotting skin bemishes, white heads, blackheads, irritated hair folicules works exceptionaly well. I like how I don't have to make the sample area the exact size of the blemish but I can dot an area, sometimes handling 3-5 blemishes well within the sample area.

-Bad in some coding or whatever- As I was dotting and Adobe would flash the analyzing text over the picture, it would blink my program off the desktop or the desktop would blink through my adobe. Very distracting and annoying. Would happen within 10 clicks and sometimes would happen back to back up to 3 clicks.

I'll update on this same post as I work more with it.

Have found it effective generally, but difficult at the edge of frame. Most recently, tried to remove a small patch of stray, thin tree branches from the edge of frame but with several attempts was unable to remove them completely. The tool kept retaining some of the branches. It got close on one occasion so I will keep trying, but the software clearly didn't want to remove them all. It's still a great tool though.

Have you applied Crop, Lens Correction, or Transform?  If so, disable those before using Remove, which tries to match the pixels that have been cropped out. See here for more details:

https://www.lightroomqueen.com/generative-remove-replace/

Most complaints about Remove are addressed in the article. But if it doesn't help, please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo and let us know which precise camera model, so we and Adobe can see the issue in detail. With nearly everyone who has posted a problem photo, we've been able to show how to remove the desired objects.

It may have been said in this forum, but it needs saying again. This is an amazing feature in "Early Access" and many of us appreciate the opportunity to provide feedback. I for one am very confident that most of the challenges will get resolved, but it's not always going to be a simple task to produce the results we want. I for one want that challenge.

Hi. I have used this new feature with amazing results but today, no matter what I do I continue to get a dark outline of the area selected. It is one of the easiest objects I have tried to remove but for some reason not today. You can see the area selected outline infont of the bird's beak & I have tried to include the bird on the branch above too just to see ifthe outline will go away but it doesn't.

Do you have an AI mask (e.g. Background) applied to that area?  If so, then do Settings > Update AI Settings.

If not, there have been several reports here about the replacements not getting matched well with the background, leaving this kind of outline or difference in texture. Using a larger, more raggedy selection has avoided the the problem in the other examples:

Hi.

No I don't have a background mask there, I made sure to check for that
first.

I had a great day yesterday using Generative AI.  I purposively took photos where I would have to remove objects but still wanted the background to look like it was in the scene.  My biggest success was removing a side of car parked near the river.  I was impressed with its removal and how the other bank that was covered up by the car looked like the car was never there.....Very, very impressive.

I took the advice of painting beyond the car and included all reflections and other artifacts.  I used Generative AI Remove in the start of my workflow.

Tried to remove a brick wall on the side of my image hoping it would be replaced by bushes that surrounded the selection...it just kept generating different brick walls in all shapes and sizes.
