- You can find Generative Remove under the newly renamed Remove panel (aka “Heal”).
- Make sure the “generative AI” checkbox is enabled before you start brushing (note: when unchecked, Lightroom will use Content-Aware Remove to fill your brushed spots).
- By default, you will be given a moment to refine your selection with an add or subtract brush. Remember to include shadows for a more accurate result! You can also skip this step by holding down ‘CTRL’ on windows or ‘CMD’ on mac as you finish your brush stroke.
- Once you’re ready to apply and have accepted the terms, Generative Remove will use Firefly AI to remove your distractions and intelligently fill in the space that’s left by the removed objects.
- Note: stable internet connection is required to use this feature.
- Generative Remove also lets you choose from multiple variations, so you can pick the one you like best, giving you full creative control.

Update (Dec 2024): With the new release, it is no longer necessary to perform Generative Remove Operations prior to Cropping.
Update:
- Enlarge your selection - if your brush stroke is too tight, you will have unexpected results.
- Remember that removing an object means painting over it, its shadow, its reflection, and any non-contiguous pieces. If you leave behind a shadow, a reflection, or a disconnected piece (e.g., a hand on a shoulder), the AI will attempt to create something to cast the shadow, reflect, or complete the unbrushed discontinuous item. You can avoid these issues by following the guidance provided in this linked tutorial. https://www.lightroomqueen.com/generative-remove-replace
The recommended order for applying edits is:
- Denoise
- Heal (includes Generative AI Remove)
- Crop (includes traditional Cropping, Lens Correction, Transform, or any operation changing the geometry of the image, including round-tripping to PS to use Gen-Expand)
- Global Edits
- AI Selective edits (Sky, Person, etc)
If you deviate from that, you may see the removed object remain as a ghost image. If this occurs, you will have to use Update AI Settings, which can be found under the Develop module 'Settings' menu.

As I wrote in an eralier reply. When elements are added, it's an indication that the area/element that you intended to remove has not been sufficiently selected/masked. This would include any shadows or projections. Using your example image, which included the red circle to help identifiy the subjects you wanted removed, I produced attached result.

Thx for your support. I always use the selection quite sparingly because a.) I want to keep as much of the original as possible and b.) I assume that the calculation time is less if the field to be replaced is smaller. But it seems to work better if you are a bit more generous with the selection 😉

I was unable to use the GR to get rid of power lines. Did I miss something?

In LR is faster and smarter than in PS. I don,t know why, but works to way better. Which is odd, because LR runs it's tools slower (kind of heavier). Maybe because this tool is only for remove and not to generate anything. Anyway, congrats for now.

Hello,
I started using it and I am not satisfied with the result.
Why, after removing the character from the left photo, was there a ghost visible in the right photo?
How to do it so that there is no trace of the deleted object?
Lightroom Classic version: 13.3 [ 202405092057-40441e28 ]

Have you tried it without Object Aware? If not, try it and report the results.

Update AI Settings: If you see ghosting, try updating the AI settings under the Develop module’s ‘Settings’ menu. This can help the tool better understand the changes you’ve made1.

Not sure if this is a bug as no one seem to have this issue. Tried reinstalling lightroom but it didn't fix the issue. Does anyone encountered this issue? Thanks.

Generative remove needs an internet connection. If a connection existed when you initiated the remove, but got lost during the process, then you'll get this error.

I now get this message every time. Nothing wrong with my Internet connection.

But what if our internet connection is fine and we're still getting that error?

This seem to have worked!
I made it into a step-by-step:
Close the app and follow the steps below.
Right click on the Windows Start menu > All Applications
Then open Windows Firewall Security > Advanced.
or
Use Windows + R keys. Write wf.msc and enter.
In the navigation pane, select Outbound Rules (top left)
Find the "Adobe Pop-up" rule, right-click and delete it. (Or clik over it and chose Allow)
After that, launch the app and the tool should be working.

I previously posted this issue under discussions but somehow it was taken down. I tried to use the new 'Generative AI' remove tool in ver 13.3 but keep getting an error message. Tried reinstalling but no help. Please kindly assist.

Me too. First I was continually getting an error that said Generative AI needs to [refresh or something similar]. I'd click OK and it would do something. Then I started getting the errors mentioned here every time I used it. I had removed distractions from about 10 images when I got another error saying it wasn't working and to try later. I looked at the 10 images I had finished, and all of the things I had removed were back in the images!
I went away for 3 hours and when I came back, everything was working. Those 10 images, though, still had the removed things back in the images. I turned on Show Overlay, and the selections (where I had brushed) were still there with the pins in them. I had to go to each image, select each pin and re-run Gen AI Remove to remove the distractions again.

I am still getting this error on my M3 everytime I use that tool. Has anybody found a solution for this for Mac OS? Thanks.

This is a fantastic feature! I tried it with reasonable success on a number of my photos.
But then I experimented with removing my young daughter from a photo—but instead of filling in the background appropriately, as before, it turned her into a puppy!!! There was previously no dog in the picture at all!
Any thoughts on what might have caused this, or how to avoid it? (It was a very attractive puppy, though!)
