This thread is now closed. Please update to LrC 14.x or LrD 8.x. If you wish to provide feedback, please go to the new article.

The Lightroom team is sharing an early look at Generative Remove, which makes it easier to remove unwanted objects and distractions, even on complex backgrounds, with a simple brush stroke. Generative Remove is powered by Firefly AI.

How to use Generative Remove on a desktop:

  • You can find Generative Remove under the newly renamed Remove panel (aka “Heal”).
  • Make sure the “generative AI” checkbox is enabled before you start brushing (note: when unchecked, Lightroom will use Content-Aware Remove to fill your brushed spots).
  • By default, you will be given a moment to refine your selection with an add or subtract brush. Remember to include shadows for a more accurate result! You can also skip this step by holding down ‘CTRL’ on windows or ‘CMD’ on mac as you finish your brush stroke.
  • Once you’re ready to apply and have accepted the terms, Generative Remove will use Firefly AI to remove your distractions and intelligently fill in the space that’s left by the removed objects.
  • Note: stable internet connection is required to use this feature.
  • Generative Remove also lets you choose from multiple variations, so you can pick the one you like best, giving you full creative control.

Checkout the FAQ and Best Practices

Please give it a try and share feedback and/or report variations in this community forum. It would greatly help to include details like which app you are using (i.e., Lightroom Classic or Camera Raw) and other system details. Our team will continually monitor this thread to track issues to improve the future experience.

Update (Dec 2024):  With the new release, it is no longer necessary to perform Generative Remove Operations prior to Cropping.

Update:
Here are some tips if you are having issues with the feature replacing your object instead of removing it.
  • Enlarge your selection - if your brush stroke is too tight, you will have unexpected results.
  • Remember that removing an object means painting over it, its shadow, its reflection, and any non-contiguous pieces. If you leave behind a shadow, a reflection, or a disconnected piece (e.g., a hand on a shoulder), the AI will attempt to create something to cast the shadow, reflect, or complete the unbrushed discontinuous item. You can avoid these issue by following the guidance provided in this linked tutorial. https://www.lightroomqueen.com/generative-remove-replace

The recommended order for applying edits is:

  1. Denoise
  2. Heal (includes Generative AI Remove)
  3. Crop (includes traditional Cropping, Lens Correction, Transform, or any operation changing the geometry of the image, including round-tripping to PS to use Gen-Expand)
  4. Global Edits
  5. AI Selective edits (Sky, Person, etc)

If you deviate from that, you may see the removed object remain as a ghost image. If this occurs, you will have to use Update AI Settings, which can be found under the Develop module 'Settings' menu.

If arnoldfoto.no's suggestions don't help, please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo, so we and Adobe can see the issue in detail. With nearly everyone who has posted a problem photo, we've been able to show how to quickly remove the desired objects.

Make the area much larger than the pole. People tend to be more "accurate"
and precise and choose an area that is too small. This may help.

I find that the removal does not work well at all. It just gives me a blured image that is not even identifiable ?? in place of what I was trying to remove. I now just usePhotoshop to remove objects.

I find that sometimes you need reapply the erase when a shadow or
unexpected substitution is added. I have had to do it several times to get
an acceptable result.
I normally do it in Photoshop, but sometimes for family photos you only
want small edits, and then is when Lightroom does a good job.

@Gabriele Martins Photo: "it stopped working. How to solve this problem?"

We'll need a lot more information:

1. Details about what you're doing and what you're observing.

2. Full-resolution screenshots (not phone pics) of the entire LR window are often best, including any error messages.

3. Do the LR menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents here so we can see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running and important LR options that are set.

4. Attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo, so we and Adobe can see the issue in detail.

Wow - amazing.  I had a shot of a dinner party illuminated with two fill fashes with diffusers on. One of the flashes reflected back off of the glass covering a painting.  I used generative AI in LRC to remove the flash whiteout and the surrounding halo. G AI managed to replace the lost cushion data and the boundary between the cushion and the sofa in the painting!!  Am seriously impressed but also concerned for the future.

@James Laver, UK I think it's when the AI knows who painted the painting and accurately adds the painter's signing of the painting we really have to start worrying… 😄

I keep getting this error. My computer, Adobe Cloud and photoshop are all still accessing the internet. Lightroom, for some reason, has suddenly stopped staying connected to the internet. When I quit lightroom and reopen it the AI Generative feature will work once or twice before failing and giving this error.  Screenshot 2024-10-01 at 2.21.35 PM.png

@Samson22828419vul7, sometimes firewalls and anti-malware mistakenly interfere with LR's outgoing network connections. Try these initial troubleshooting steps to identify if that's the issue:

1. Temporarily disable any firewall and anti-malware package on your computer.

2. Connect your computer to a different network (phone hotspot, coffee-shop wifi, neighbor's network, etc.)

There is no feather option, sometimes resulting in visible separation between the removed area and the background instead of blending into the background.

This can happen if you don't select the shadows, reflections, or all the disconnected parts of an object (even very small ones). If this tip doesn't help, please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo, so we and Adobe can see the issue in detail. With nearly everyone who has posted a problem photo, we've been able to show how to quickly remove the desired objects.

This feature works great most of the time, however I think it gets confused sometimes. For example, I was trying to remove a wedding guest from the dance floor.  I wanted the generative REMOVE to just remove the object. However, it thought I was trying to REPLACE the guest with some other cursed AI attempt at a human being. The results were pretty hilarious, but it did not help me with my work.  Its supposed to be object aware, so I would also think it should also be CONTEXT Aware.   The healing and clone stamps did a better job.
