The Lightroom team is sharing an early look at Generative Remove, which makes it easier to remove unwanted objects and distractions, even on complex backgrounds, with a simple brush stroke. Generative Remove is powered by Firefly AI.

How to use Generative Remove on a desktop:

  • You can find Generative Remove under the newly renamed Remove panel (aka “Heal”).
  • Make sure the “generative AI” checkbox is enabled before you start brushing (note: when unchecked, Lightroom will use Content-Aware Remove to fill your brushed spots).
  • By default, you will be given a moment to refine your selection with an add or subtract brush. Remember to include shadows for a more accurate result! You can also skip this step by holding down ‘CTRL’ on windows or ‘CMD’ on mac as you finish your brush stroke.
  • Once you’re ready to apply and have accepted the terms, Generative Remove will use Firefly AI to remove your distractions and intelligently fill in the space that’s left by the removed objects.
  • Note: stable internet connection is required to use this feature.
  • Generative Remove also lets you choose from multiple variations, so you can pick the one you like best, giving you full creative control.

Checkout the FAQ and Best Practices

Please give it a try and share feedback and/or report variations in this community forum. It would greatly help to include details like which app you are using (i.e., Lightroom Classic or Camera Raw) and other system details. Our team will continually monitor this thread to track issues to improve the future experience.

Update (Dec 2024):  With the new release, it is no longer necessary to perform Generative Remove Operations prior to Cropping.

Update:
Here are some tips if you are having issues with the feature replacing your object instead of removing it.
  • Enlarge your selection - if your brush stroke is too tight, you will have unexpected results.
  • Remember that removing an object means painting over it, its shadow, its reflection, and any non-contiguous pieces. If you leave behind a shadow, a reflection, or a disconnected piece (e.g., a hand on a shoulder), the AI will attempt to create something to cast the shadow, reflect, or complete the unbrushed discontinuous item. You can avoid these issue by following the guidance provided in this linked tutorial. https://www.lightroomqueen.com/generative-remove-replace

The recommended order for applying edits is:

  1. Denoise
  2. Heal (includes Generative AI Remove)
  3. Crop (includes traditional Cropping, Lens Correction, Transform, or any operation changing the geometry of the image, including round-tripping to PS to use Gen-Expand)
  4. Global Edits
  5. AI Selective edits (Sky, Person, etc)

If you deviate from that, you may see the removed object remain as a ghost image. If this occurs, you will have to use Update AI Settings, which can be found under the Develop module 'Settings' menu.

Remove first, crop later. If some of the person is hidden by the crop, Gen AI tries to rebuild based on those cropped pixels.

good start but sometimes it adds elements as opposed to removing them  . For example, i wanted to remove a man and a woman from a photo as thr subject was huge tree instead of removing the couple teh AI engine replaced them  with a dog ...Even the variations contained animals ...if we could have a prompt like PS that would be great...

As has been mentioned above and included within the FAQ (link shared in first post at top of thread); you must select the entire component to be removed. This includes shadows, etc. It's also important that you apply any crop after using Generative Remove otherwise the area not visible to you may still have an influence the final result.

I often use generative AI in Photoshop to fill the edges of panoramic pictures, I stitched in Lightroom.
So for test reasons of the new feature, I took a complex sample with a floor and high ISO. But it's still the same as before: Lightroom does not reconize the "empty" edges as part of the image.
So, I still have to switch to Photoshop where this is no issue...

p.s. btw: I often asked for an update on the panorama stitcher. I miss a function to move the centre of the picture, like you can do in 20 years old PTgui. Hope, that AI can help here soon, too?

Really good step into right direction 🙂
But with beta, performance is still bad. marking the area/object that should be filled is veery sloow.

Hope, this will be improved 😉

Really awesome feature!! I am working in real estate and in Lightroom i merge to hdr and i edit my pictures. I am still waiting Sky Replacement directly in Lightroom Classic, you do not have idea how much time i loose opening each photo in Photoshop to add sky replacement. Please come with a sky replacement and AI based sharpness, is much better than normal sharpness.

For some reason, after this update I can't move the source selection of my healing/cloning brush tool, so when I don't use the AI option, just the "old" brush. Normally, you had a tiny button in every circle or shape and you could move them to anywhere: either the source or the destination. Now I can only move the destination around. I hope this isn't a bug and I disabled something by accident. It's driving me crazy. If I want to adjust it, I need to delete the current brush circle and draw a new one, no matter how little I want to move it. It's insane.

Can someone confirm this? Should I report this as a bug?

Experimenting a bit more - very exciting. However, "Synch Settings >> Remove" doesn't seem to work. Across multiple sets of bracketed frames, it says "Lightroom Classic. Skipped x Generative Remove spots" (where x = # of selected frames - 1)

Hey Ian, great to hear from you - hope you're well!  I looked at the link above, and I must be blind, but I don't see anything about sync settings(?)

Clicking deeper, I did find https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-cc/using/generative-remove-faq.html#best-practices about copy/paste. I tried again with copy/paste (instead of Synch) and still get the "skipped" modal dialog box. Based on your suggestion, I then did look at develop and saw the "Update All" button - so I guess it did actually try to copy, but didn't auto-update.  WISH 1: Change confusing modal dialog which looks like nothing happened. WISH 2: enable auto-update esp. with bracketed shots, would hope for an identical "removal" so that Focus Stacking and/or Pano Stitching will still work. WISH 2b: if can't do auto-update, then provide "update all" function to avoid going frame by frame and having to manually do so.    For a beta release though, looking promising!

I was watching some youtube videos about the latest release that includes the generative AI remove feature, and it was mentioned that once it gets promoted out of early access it will require monthly credits to use.

Does this mean, on top of the subscription price I already pay for the 2tb photography plan, I'll have to pay additional to use this feature?

At the moment, it's all still being figured out, so we don't know details. What we can say is credits are already included in your plan (the amount varies by plan), and if you go beyond those credits, it'll still work but slower, even if you don't buy more credits. At the moment, there is no speed penalty even if you use up all your credits.

Why does a “REMOVE TOOL” persist in creating objects, when we want to use it to DELETE them? Explanation: I want to delete a person in the background, who is in front of some foliage. The tool does delete this person, but replaces him with someone else? I feel like I'm being trolled by the software.

It appears that the Remove tool is ruined!  I can no longer fine tune the placement of the sample area.  Is this really the case or am I missing something?
