P: New AI-powered Lens Blur (Early Access) available across all surfaces.

This post applies to Camera Raw, Lightroom Classic & the Lightroom Ecosystem products.

The Lightroom team is sharing an early look for AI-powered Lens Blur–giving you the ability to apply optical blur on any image regardless of how it was taken. Lens Blur is now available to try on all Lightroom surfaces.

How does Lens Blur work?
  • Lens blur applies a depth-based blur effect, similar to what can be achieved with real-world optical lenses, by using AI-generated or device-captured depth data (when available).
  • Lens blur will automatically prioritize focus for the detected subject, but you can also interactively adjust the focus distance. Precise focus range tuning is also available (currently desktop only: Lightroom Desktop, Lightroom Classic, and Camera Raw).
  • You can also further customize the Bokeh shapes, highlight Boost (desktop only), and make depth map refinements (desktop only).

Will my Lens Blur adjustments on one surface be synced to other surfaces? I.e. mobile to web to desktop, and vice versa?
  • Yes, all edits will sync. To revert settings, you can go back to previous versions or history steps, or un-apply Lens Blur settings.

Can I add Lens Blur settings to my presets?
  • No, presets and copy + paste workflows are not currently enabled for Lens Blur during Early Access.

For more information, please check out Lens Blur.

Please give it a try and share feedback in this thread as we continually improve this feature.

Please report your system info via Lightroom>Help>System Info...

If you encounter GPU driver issues while using ML features in LrClassic/LrD/ACR, please try to update to the latest macOS version or if you are on a Windows machine, follow https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html to update your machine to the latest GPU driver and  see if the problem resolves itself.

If the OS or the driver is not available or possible and the problem persists, then try the following

My PC is older than that but runs WIndows 10 with 32GB  of RAM. I'd like Adobe to address this issue. I think this feature is amazing but if I have this persistent problem, I'll start avoiding using it.

I have the same problem, screen goes black and I have to press power button to get it turn back on.  It is like it hibernates because I get the same screen when it comes back on, one finger recognized LR is still open as before.  I am on a new Asus Vivobook with GeForce RTX4050 with 6GB VRAM and full graphics enabled in preferences.  On some images it is impossible to use the blur.

Yes, I have that problem in spades, with the module going unresponsive (according to Windows) when clicking on the image to expand/contract it ... and it will continue flipping back and forth between expanded and contracted several times. It is actually unusable for me.

At the first glance looks pretty nice.

But can someone from Adobe clarify how this works internally?

I mean does it have AI models builtin, or will require internet connection to work?

I'm worried because I sometimes use LrC from remote locations without internet coverage.

For Lightroom Classic, the models are local.
You should be able to turn off your internet and still use the feature.

Works great on people and subjects both on jpg and RAW. The depth map is amazing.

In some cases, hair selection is not perfect, it blurs around the edge of the head, so single hairs are blurred which looks fazy, also jewelry on hair is blured. In some cases, triangular shaped space between legs or arms is not detected; adding blur or focus with brush is not perfect, it looks like working on 2D not on 3D depth map.

agreed. My biggest complaint is "fly away hairs". they are hard to get to look natrual. Here is hoping they refine this moving forward.

I acknowledge that this is a beta feature but let's be honest, mobile phones can do way better. I would expect Adobe to be the leader, not a follower

I disagree. Even on a first try, this funtion is more subtle, picks out the subject better, and has far more options than I have in iPhone portait mode.

I use the Samsung S23 Ultra's feature. Samsung constantly improves it so it is pretty good, but it is still a cell phone picture. Using the zoom features and pixel peeping there is really no comparison to a real camera ...yet.

I absolutly not agree, iphone portrait mode is very bad, ugly and flat I hate it when I see it. On lightromm theres depth to the blur its way way way better and nobody with fonctional eyes can argue on that

so with your "fonctional" eyes, you can clearly see how badly it's failing on this example, it's not a complicated hair structure, just a simple over-the-shoulder background. If we add hair to the equation its a dissaster
