With the new update, when using Select Sky or Select Subject, i get an unexpected error message saying something went wrong and the request could not be completed.
With the latest LrD 7.0, LrClassic 13.0 and ACR 16.0 release, here is some additional workaround that you can try:
If you encounter GPU driver issues while using ML features in LrClassic/LrD/ACR, please try to update to the latest macOS version or if you are on a Windows machine, follow https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html to update your machine to the latest GPU driver and see if the problem resolves itself.
If the OS or the driver is not available or possible

It's more likely that the recent driver from AMD is buggy. The AI masking in LR and PS is very sensitive to driver bugs.

I had no idea it updated, it was all of a sudden not able to detect backgrounds or subjects..and if it selected anything, it would be edges of the photo instead of the subject in the center..or would tell me that there was no subject or background to detect >: O

I seem to have the same problem. Non of the masking tools work. I get the error message "Something went wrong, an unextected error" the GPU is then disabled. I've updated to the newest driver, tried without using the Graphics Processor, checked compatibility of the graphics card etc etc, all that was suggested to solve the problem. To no avail, the issue persists. I do have the feeling we need to wait for a LrC update, from what I can remember it suddenly occurs since the last update! System info attached.

The message was indictaing that LrC failed the GPU compatability test that's undertaken each time the app is launched. The failure occasionally occurs after an update, even though the GPU is compatible. When the failure occurs a log file is retained and effectively blocks use of some GPU based features. You can clear the log file as described in below steps.
Quit Lightroom Classic.
Locate the Camera Raw GPU Config.txt file.
The user Library folder is hidden by default in macOS X 10.7 and later releases. Use the directions here.
Manually delete the Camera Raw GPU Config.txt file.
Relaunch Lightroom Classic.

That's a nine-year-old graphics card, and as of two years ago, Nvidia is no longer fixing most bugs in its drivers:
https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/203214/en-us/
LR is constantly tripping over driver bugs, since it uses the GPU much differently than most apps (including games). So it's very unlikely future updates of LR will work with that card.
Unfortunately, LR's AI masking doesn't obey the setting of Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor and it will try to use the GPU even when that setting is off. Adobe stubbornly refuses to provide an option to disable the use of the GPU for AI masking:
https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-ideas/p-ai-masking-should-obey-preferences-gt-perfo...
As a result, users like you with older hardware won't be able to use AI masking.

So I had the same problem.
Lightroom was working just fine until out of the blue decided not to render object masks...at all.
I remembered an old bug, I wouldn't be surprised if it is still there, when Lightroom encountered a problem with GPU it was switching to CPU and for you to switch back to GPU you had to delete the GPU folder inside the CameraRaw folder.
So I just got there and start deleting folders. It didn't took long actually my clairvoyant abilities instantly indicated that probably the ModelZoo folder was the problem so I just deleted that and problem fixed.

Ok so I am having the same issue after upgrading from Lightroom (where masks worked fine) to Lightroom Classic. The sky mask works fine, the subject and background masks return the error 'Something went wrong. There was an unexpected error and your request could not be completed.'
I have updated my GPU and tried deleting the Camera Raw GPU Config.txt, but no luck.

You've got a 6-year-old laptop graphics chipset with 1 GB of GPU memory, less than the 2 GB minimum in LR's system requirements. You could be tripping over the small amount of memory or a bug in the graphics driver -- though you have the latest driver from AMD, it's pretty clear that the graphics manufacturers give lower priority to fixing bugs with older hardware.
"after upgrading from Lightroom (where masks worked fine) to Lightroom Classic."
LR Classic and LR Desktop both use the same Camera Raw engine internally. It's likely that when you switched, you went from a slightly older version of the Camera Raw engine to a newer version. You could try the latest version of LR Desktop and the latest version of Photoshop / Camera Raw and see if they all behave the same with the same photos.

If the OS or the driver is not available or possible and the problem persists, then try the following workaround method as a last resort. The method provides a mechanism to allow LrDesktop/LrClassic/ACR customers to force the ML inference to always run on CPU instead of default. See details here https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/acr-gpu-faq.html#lens-blur.

That graphics processor is 10 years old, and you have the latest driver for it. But Nvidia stopped providing bug fixes and improvements to the driver after the December 2021 release (three years ago) -- it only provides "security fixes":
https://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us
LR is very sensitive to bugs in graphics drivers.
Unfortunately, Adobe inexplicably refuses to let you disable the use of the GPU for its AI masking commands, even though it's trivial to implement and would let you use AI masking (it would be sluggish but usable). So if you want to use AI masking and other AI commands, you'll have to get a new graphics card (and possibly a new computer).

You have Lightroom Ecosystem (Cloud-Based) (Lr). This is the community for Lightroom Classic (LrC).
You should post at :
Your GPU is practically ancient for Lightroom, be that Lr or LrC. And the 4 GB of VRAM is probably insufficient for AI (based on other members experience, more than what the Adobe documents are a bit muddy on)
Also:
"Graphics Processor Info: DirectX: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M (23.21.13.9125) - 4 GB"
So your GPU driver is old, you have v391.25, heck released back in 2018, current at NVIDIA is v561.09, Lr and LrC can be very very GPU driver dependate.
