I have the same problem. Lightroom Classic CC (Version 8.0) crashes when I want to import photos (add folder). All drivers are updated, Windows 10 and Creative Cloud are updated, my computer has no other problems. It is not overheating. The CPUs reach about 30 %. only about half of the memory (16 GB) is used. I did delete the cache already, I deleted and re-installed Lightroom, etc. No additional Lightroom modules are installed.
I don’t know what to do, the expensive subscription becomes unusable to me. I have to process a certain batch of photos within my workflow and can’t.
Any help?

You can try Deleting the LR Preferences file.
http://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/
If that doesn't solve the problem uninstall and reinstall LR from the CC DTA.
If that doesn't solve the problem then more than likely you have a hardware problem.
What is crashing? LR only or is your system crashing and or shutting down and or restarting?

Thanks for the reply. I tried that already, both deleting the preferences, and uninstalling and reinstalling Lightroom, as I wrote.
It is only Lightroom that is freezing - the mouse pointer turns into the rotating wheel, and the programme won’t accept inputs anymore. The system runs just fine, and I can continue working with any other application. In the task manager, Lightroom is then listed as not responding. I can shut down Lightroom via the task manager. No other error ever occurs.

What kind of computer, Mac or Win PC?
Sounds like you are on a Mac.

It appears you are trying to add images from a NAS into your catalog. There are several types of NAS that lead to problems such as crashes or lockups in Lightroom. I have no clue why that happens but several people have reported that here.

1) How are you importing?
Using LR to copy from memory card (SD, CF, etc) ?
(A) From a memory card placed in a card reader?
(B) From your camera via a USB cable?
or perhaps
(C) From a folder on your computer in which you previously (outside of LR) copied your images from your memory card? (I se you are adding not copying)
2) If (a) or (b) what happens if a different memory card is used.
2b) and if (b), what happens with a different USB cable. But why use method (B)
2c) If (c), well that is a more complex issue, That would eliminate the easy your SD card is kaput solution.
Note: all that created while a better answer was being posted.

Thank you all kindly for your help. It’s correct that the folder I’m trying to import is on my NAS. On the same Lightroom catalogue, I have about 15 000 photos in maybe 50 folders on the same NAS. It’s unclear to me why this specific one keeps crashing repeatedly.
However, I have now tried a workaround, which seems to have solved the problem: I copied the folder to a local hard disk, then imported it into Lightroom. After deleting the folder on the local disk, I pointed Lightroom to the “new” location on the NAS. This worked!
Not ideal, but at least I continue with my work.

You could try, on your next import, copying the image files to a folder on your NAS using the File Manager for the OS you are using then in LR click the Import button and then the "Add" option at the top of the import dialog and then Point it to the folder you had copied the images to. That will Add those images to the LR catalog and leave them where they are.

I have been having this same problem for a while too.
- Open Adobe Creative Cloud
- Open Lightroom Classic
- Once open, I either drag and drop the images, click on the "import" button, or select a folder from the left menu and in all instances the software crashes.
I tried uninstalling and installing Lightroom twice. I uninstalled and installed the Adobe Creative Cloud and the problem still persist.
I am using:
Windows 10 Pro 10.0.17134
AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Eight-Core Processor 3.70 GHz
Motherboard: X470 AORUS Gaming 5 Wifi, Ver. F2 3/14/18
Installed Physical Memory: 32.0 GB
2 x 16GB DDR4, 1066.0 MHz
Nvidia GeForce GT 710
Please help.

what is your GPU driver version?
and if GPU acceleration is on, try it off

I went under Edit > Preferences > Performance
and unchecked the "Use Graphics Processor" box.
I also purged the Cashe in the same screen.
Lightroom allows me to use all and click on all buttons and elements. It works as fast as it has always worked, but when I try to import, it crashes before opening a window to select which photos to import.
I've also tried File > Import Photos and video, and Ctrl + Shift + I, and in all cases as soon as I ask Lightroom to import, it crashes.
I went to Nvidia and they don't have driver updates for my GPU. I am aware it is a very basic GPU but I am not sure if I would have to invest on a better one if that's what is causing my problems. It has always worked fine with it, until recently.

I decided to restart my computer in SAFE MODE just to try my luck. As it turns out, I was able to import my photographs without a problem. I restarted my computer in normal mode and I am finally working on my photos.
But of course, this is very inconvenient and something still has to be resolved.

If Safe Mode works then this indicates a rogue driver or device is the cause of your crashes. Adobe are currently tracking a number of potential culprits for import crashes with Android devices currently being a common crash trigger on some systems. If you have an Android phone or tablet connected to your computer then try disconnecting it.
If above doesn't work, then I suggest you submit the crash log files as described at Submit a crash report for Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom
Make sure that you also include your email address when sending the crash logs

Problem persists. As I've updated CC many times, some of them allow me to import in safe mode, some do not. I am not able to submit a crash report, since it doesn't prompt the window to send the report. I've followed the instructions in the link posted to submit a crash report, but it still doesn't work for me.
