I like the idea of using facial recognition, but I have always been a little hesitant to take the time to do it because I didn't know if it could be embedded into the metadata.
Is this possible yet or is this still an "within your LR catalog only" feature?
The face recognition data, including the face regions and any associated names, is included when you save metadata to XMP on the original file in Lightroom (i.e. save to XMP, import the image into a different catalog, and you will have the original face regions and names, as well as person keywords, in the new catalog). Also, if you export the image, and include all metadata and do not check the "Remove Person Info" box, the resulting file will also contain the full face recongnition data that w

The person's name is added as a keyword and therefore stored with the metadata; however, you can choose to exclude both Person and Location info from the export file. See the Metadata section of the Export dialog.
