RAW profile — applying different amounts or same amount of sharpness?

hello, I myself struggle to tell the difference in sharpness but I am still curious to know whether all RAW profiles i.e." adobe color, adobe faithful" apply different amounts of sharpness or the same amount of sharpness — this question comes from reading Scott Kelby's Lightroom Classic Book pg 130

"this default RAW profile is called adobe colour......and it applies some sharpening" — do all RAW profiles apply the same amount of sharpening or do they apply different amounts of sharpness?

Well, I thought I could test this out and state No, but my test indicates perhaps yes. Test was as follows:

In a simple test I just accomplished, The answer appears to be Yes, They can apply different sharpening upon import.

Now to do that, I accomplished the following

  • Took a fresh new photograph. I was having issues when just removing an image from a catalog and then importing it back as to make sure no settings were applied.
  • In LrC /Preferences/Presets/, I made sure the defaults were set, not camera specific for the RAW defaults, as that could skew the test.
  • Brought up the Import screen, Made sure no presets were being applied. as that could skew the test
  • Imported the photo
  • Looked at the image in the Develop Module as to make sure the Adobe Defaults were applied, Yep the Default Profile, yep the undesired sharpening. (Fuji X users often detest the ADOBE default sharpening)
  • I changed the Profile to a Camera Matching Profile, in this case Classic NEG. This is the only mod I applied for the test, for the profile I was about to create.
  • Over in the Presets Panel, chose to create a preset
  • Selected only the Treatment and Profile (naturally I probably should select more, but, for this test, keep it simple)
  • And created the preset
  • Took a new photo, imported it, selecting the new preset
  • Inspected it in the Develop Module, yep Classic NEG, and as for the sharpening. DANG I still see that sharpening.

Now, how to fix

  • One way is to just import the photos, then Reset them, and apply the LrC general Preset /Classic-General/Zeroed/
  • Another way would be to create a preset as above, EXCEPT to change the sharpening (perhaps via reset and zeroed) And include that in your profile (along with any other desired edits) and use that profile at Import.

thanks for the reply. I reset a photo, made 3 virtual copies and set all 3 to grayscale. Then I applied 3 different profiles to the photos. I found that the difference in contrast between the photos made them "appear" to have different levels of sharpness but no way of knowing whether the actual sharpness tool has been affected/used under the hood at the default setting of the relevant RAW profile.

Adobe profiles generally apply (under the hood) a Curve and "RGB look table"...some profiles don't even aplly a curve but just the RGB table.
