SD card import issues on MacBook Pro (2021)

Community Beginner ,

Hi there

I am having two issues with my new MacBook Pro (2021, M1 Pro, 14") when importing images into Lightroom Classic from the built-in SD card reader:

  1. Raw and JPEGs are imported separately despite the relevant import setting being unchecked, i.e. "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" is unchecked.
  2. I need to import from the same SD card two or three times to ensure that all the images have been successfully copied.

Please can you help me with these two issues?

I have found a workround by copying from the SD card to a temporary folder on my MacBook Pro and then importing into Lightroom Classic from there. However I would expect that I should be able to import directly from the SD card as I do on my Windows desktop PC (using its integrated SD card reader).

I've never experienced these issues on my Windows desktop PC and I've been using Lightroom Classic for many years.

Thanks
Colin

hmm, just in case, see:

might be an issue with LrC accessing drives on a MAC. Allow LrC full access.

Are you importing from the Files section or the Device section. It should be Files.

Lightroom imports the JPEG always, it's just treated as a sidecar file when the box is unchecked. If you really don't want them to come in, leave the box on and in the Import window, sort by File Type and exclude the JPEGs.

If that's not the issues and something looks broken, it's time to reset preferences.

Hi Sean

Thanks for getting back to me quickly.

Just to confirm that I'm importing from Files and I want the JPEGs as sidecar files as I do on Windows.

Can you please clarify what you suggest I should reset in preferences?

Thanks

Colin

Hi Colin,

You should be seeing that behaviour based on settings. Here's how to reset preferences:

https://helpx.adobe.com/ie/lightroom-classic/help/setting-preferences-lightroom.html

In short, you can hold Option on the General tab of Preferences (though I'm told it's now Settings on Ventura-I haven't updated yet). This reveals a hidden button- Reset all preferences and relaunch. Do have a look at the article though for more informations.

Not a solution to your problem, but a observation and bit of unasked advice.

Why did you use Finder and copy the photos to a temporary folder?  By this I mean, why did you not copy them to the desired folder you want them in when importing into LrC? And then import them in LrC via Add?

Inquiry, upon import, did you select Add, or Copy?

Hi there

I used Image Capture to copy from the SD card to the temporary folder so I can check all the images first. I then used Copy upon import to move them to the correct location. I'm being cautious just now in case I lose any images as I'm not sure if there's an issue with my SD card reader. I do appreciate I could just copy straight to the target folder and Add upon import to LrC. I agree that your method would also work.

On Windows, I just import directly from my SD card to the target folder using Copy without any intermediate stages. This has always worked on Windows for me.

Hope this helps.

Colin
