Several Catalog/General Lightroom Issues

Hello,

I have been having multiple issues with Lightroom Classic, and it seems that many of them are catalog/preview issues. I'm hoping that there is a root cause for all of the issues I'm having, but anyone with more knowldege than me can be the judge of that. I'm going to describe each issue seperately, detail the troubleshooting I've attempted, then provide system and version information at the end.

Currently Lightroom only opens with an old catalog, but I have used the most recent backup catalog has been functional in the past so I'm pretty sure it is intact.

1. The first issue I have is the following error:

Screenshot 2024-10-19 152426.png

This issue has been persistent through several remedy methods:

- Uninstalling and Re-installing Lightroom Classic

- Closing Lightroom instances in Task Manager

- Starting Lighroom from a backup catalog

- Restarting my computer and starting Lightroom from a backup catalog

It seems to crop up at random instances, not really prompted by anything consistent, and going a way on a whim which is endlessly frustrating. Sometimes the error message above does not show up at all, and Lightroom loads partially, before freezing and requiring a hard shutdown of my computer. At the time of this post it is not showing this issue but earlier today it was coming up.

2. Most folders in my catalog are showing a content of 0 photos:

These folders are associated with the same named folders on my hard drive. The folders on the hard drive are present and accessible like normal. My recent imports (past few weeks) are accessible like normal, the majority are not present in lightroom. This issue has not always been present, it has only cropped up sometime in the last 2 months. I cannot show my own folders showing zero due to the underlined problem at the top of this post but it is similar to the photos from this post.

I'm sure these are not the only issues I have had but the others are obscure or minor enough that they have not come up recently. These problems with Lightroom have been tremendously frustrating, and any solution is greatly appreciated. Anything I can provide or answer to help you I'm willing to give you.

To be able to open the catalog again: While having LrC closed, look for a file "YourCatalogName".lock next to your catalog files and delete it, then try again.

I believe the name is 'Catalogname.lrcat.lock', so it includes the .lrcat extension too. Anyway, it should be easy to identify if you look for .lock.

I am going to take a bold step and rewrite the above for clarity. "While having LrC closed, look for a file "YourCatalogName".lrcat.lock next to your catalog files and delete the lock file only"

Hello, your information allowed me to open lightroom with a much older catalog. Attempting to open lightroom with my most current catalog results in lightroom failing to open completely.

Try if this helps:

- Close LrC

- Start LrC while holding down the Ctrl key

- In the dialog opening, select the catalog that fails and use the option to check its integrity

Could you please describe further "failing to open completely"?

No problem:

When opening the recent backed up catalog file (extracted from a zipped folder) Lightroom does not open, does not show any signs of opening or loading. There is no "loading" signs (like a circle on the cursor). There is also no window of lightroom that opens no matter how long i wait.

In contrast, opening Lightroom through the desktop shortcut opens the application promptly. It takes a little while to load, and it is clear to me that it is using an old catalog because no files are present (due to an unrelated hard drive corruption)

Regarding old catalog ... you need to look for other catalog files on your hard drive(s). Use your operating system's search feature on all drives and in all folders to find files whose name ends with .LRCAT (probably this will be lowercase) and then open each catalog file found until you find the one you want with all of the recent and old photos.

Hello, I'd like to give you a little update on my situation given my radio silence. I have not been able to test your advice due to another unrelated hard drive corruption that I've had to deal with. I don't believe my lightroom catalogs were affected because those are stored locally on my computer. I'll test your advice as soon as possible.
