Simple install question

Background: I have LR perpetual version 6 on my computer.

I purchased the "Photography Plan" and downloaded it.

Opening the new LR, "Add Some Photos" is on the screen.

I would like to work in Classic LR.  How do I access my old catalog?

Hi Sutherland623,

Please go to the Creative Cloud apps catalog. Locate Lightroom Classic, and click Download. Here's a direct link: Lightroom Classic Get Started

Your app begins to download. To launch your new app, find the Lightroom Classic icon in the Apps panel and click Open.

Don't "add" - cancel that. You already have got a LR library, you don't need to begin again.

In the new software use the menu to "open Catalog".

Browse to and select the old LR Catalog that you have been using with LR 6 (make sure LR 6 is not running also).

For use in the new version, LR realises that your old Catalog will need to be converted. LR does this as a new copy - it asks you what to call this - leaving your old Catalog unchanged.

When it finishes, the new Catalog contains all the same photos, edits, Collections etc as the old one does.

Note: the photos in both Catalogs refer to the exact same source images on disk - they share the use of those files and folders. So it is a good idea IMO, to stop using that older version of LR now and to import new images only into the new LR. There is a real risk of confusion especially if you are writing your edits out to disk (XMP), and most particularly if you now delete any images. Each Catalog cannot know whether a different Catalog has, or has not, got a given photo file imported. You can safely archive the old Catalog to a backup location, and then remove it from the computer. And you can uninstall LR6 once you are comfortable with the new LR version.

Set up an identical Folder hierarchy for use in the new version. Do this at the OS level of your machine, and this is also an opportunity to move to better storage solutions if you'd like.

This is the wrong thing to do, the folder hierarchy is already there, ready to be used by Lightroom Classic.

If appears you may have downloaded the new Lightroom (Cloud-based photo service). Install the Lightroom Classic application using the Creative Cloud app.

When you first launch the Lightroom Classic app you should get a popup that offers to concrete a copy of your existing Catalog to one compatible with the Classic version of Lightroom.
