Slow on PC after 13.0.1 update

Community Beginner ,
Oct 14, 2023 Oct 14, 2023

Hello,

Lightroom Classic is running extremely slow after updating to the latest version on windows 10. The problem started after the 13.0 update and is still remaining after the 13.01 update. Scrolling images in Grid-view in Library is not a big issue but if you click on an image it takes about 6 minutes for the caption data to show up and instead of showing the keywords for that image it says "working...". At the same time the labels (with info like filename, file format) in the expanded cells are gone. Another problem is importing images which takes hours instead of minutes.

Is there anyone else having these issues and have any idea what to do? The graphics drivers are updated, I have purged the caches and optimized the catalog. Everything was working fine before the 13.0 update.

/Erik Svensson

I don't see this on my installation. LR is working fine and smooth, although I installed an older, not so powerful graphics card.

Try resetting the preferences of Lightroom Classic:  https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/setting-preferences-lightroom.html

Backup your preferences prior to resetting the preferences: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/preference-file-and-other-file-locations.html

If this also doesn't help, please provide a copy of your 'System Info'. This can be get from the LrC Help > System Info menu item. There's a copy button in the System Info dialog. Press this button and paste the info into your next forum post.

My System: Intel i7-8700K - 64GB RAM - NVidia Geforce RTX 3060 - Windows 11 Pro 24H2 -- LR-Classic 14 - Photoshop 26 - Nik Collection 8 - PureRAW 5 - Topaz PhotoAI 4

Hi Axel Matt,

Thanks for your respond! I have done a resetting of the preferences of Lightroom Classic and the program runs better now but still far from good. You can see my system info below.

Kind regards,

Erik

Hello again,

Just an update! After the resetting lightroom runs better but not as good as it should. I also did an uninstall and a reinstall of lightroom with no improvment. I gave up and have returned back to lightroom 12.5. At the moment, I consider Lightroom 13 a broken product, at least for my computer. I hope a new update will come soon. Thanks for your tips and help.

Erik

Hi Erik
I had/have the same issue. Maybe you can resolve it by deactivating all the presets and if you have also Photoshop installed check the performace settings of Photoshop and optimize them. It is strange that you have to update also the Photoshop settings to optimize Lightroom Classic but the latter uses Camera Raw without having the possibility to optimize the settings of that program because it starts in the background.
Next to that, I don't understand how the Develope module gets very slow because you have 100s of presets installed? You only use them in lightroom on picture level and you cannot use them on masking level but Lightroom Classic gets seriously slow.

You can rename the Settings folder to Settings.old and create a new one when you don't use Lightroom Classic. You find the folder here: C:\Users\rvune\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\Settings

Hi,

If I decided to go back a version - to 13/12 - would that be a problem because of the catalogue change?

Would I lose the work I have done so far on version 13.0.1 because it required a new catalogue?

Thanks. Nicky

Hi,

You will probably not be able to use the same catalogue in Lightroom classic 12 as you used in 13. But you can export and import the changes you have made in the latested catalogue (v13) to the older catalogue (v12) by using "Export as catalog..." if you still have a copy of the v12 catalouge left.

Best regards,
Erik

Hi Erik,

Thank you. Would you mind giving me a little more information on the process of moving the changes made in the catalogue (used for v13) to the previous catalogue for v12?

Thanks so much.

Hi Nicky,

I´m sorry, I thought it would work to use the "Export as catalog.."-tool in your case but it´s not possible if you export from a newer catalogue version to an older one. I use this tool to sync the catalouges between my two computers, and it works if the catalogues have the same version or if you sync from an older to a newer one, but not the other way.

For the moment I don´t see any way to keep the work you have done so far on v13 if you go back to v12. Perhaps some one else have a better answer.

/Erik

Same issue for me. It's running like a dog.  My cpu is maxing out even when I change a folder.  This didn't happen before the last update.

Even when things are idle the cpu is processing.   The rig is a high end Ryzen 9 with 64gb memory and a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti graphics card.

I've tried everything, resetting presets, clear cache, reset syncing (alt rebuild sync data).  It it so slow to click between modules,  libary,  develop, and any type of enhancement, or even navigate in library.  It feels like some kind of background task is consuming all the resources.   At times it looks like it improved, such as now about 30 minutes after that reset.  crossing fingers that it will settle down after time.

I'd like to provide an update.  I discovered waiting for it to catch up with whatever updates it was doing helped so that i could process (during that following few days).  However I also discovered last week that my cpu fan and cooler was failing which was causing performance issue on CPU, compounding the problem.  eventually the fan did not come on and temperature rose to 70C, causing cpu to shutdown and alerted me to the issue.   I've since over last week or so replaced the cpu cooler (i had single fan EVGA clc before on the 1950 threadripper).  I now have the newer 3 fan EVGA clcx which has display of temp, and is showing 40-50C range.   So my original evaluation nov 24 probably wasn not entirely accurate, apoligies.

"So my original evaluation nov 24 probably wasn not entirely accurate, apologies."

No need to apologize. It's not uncommon to see problems with the cooling system reported here (e.g. with Apple Intel Macbooks), and they can be hard to diagnose, since neither Windows nor Mac provide a notification to the user -- you have to dig deep. LR is often the trigger of the symptoms, since it can use the CPU and GPU much more heavily than the typical app, even games.

I had the same issue on my iMac M1, but it went away as soon as I upgraded from Ventura 13.x to Sonoma 14.x. Most likely it has to do with the GPU.

Same problem here. Lightroom became unbearably slow after updating from 12.5 to 13.2. Sliders were unresponsive in Develop Mode. Organizing edited photos in Survey View was really laggy and photo's jumped all over the place willy-nilly, sometimes crashing the program. My PC computer is definitely powerful enough for Lightroom.

I'm of the opinion that its not my job as a paying customer to fix issues updates introduce, so I just rolled back to to the older version (12.5). Everything seems to work just fine now. I would guess that there are major bugs in the new version or there is some kind of problem in the installation process that messes things up. Either way it should not be my problem.

@Bluffy, a common cause of performance problems and glitches is an out-of-date graphics driver.

Update your graphics driver by going directly to the manufacturer's web site:

If that doesn't help, please copy/paste here the entire contents of the LR menu command Help > System Info -- that will let us see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running.
