Star rating not updating in UI

Lightroom Classic 14.1 1nd 14.1.1

MacOS 15.2

 

- Import images

- Select image(s)

- Press a number key to apply a star raing

- The UI (Library module) does not update to show the stars below the thumbnails

 

The ratings seem to be applied as I can filter based on the newly applied ratings even though she starts do not appear.

 

The stars will appear after closing and reopening Lightroom

Whether or not you can produce this as an Adobe employee is irrelevant. It is happening to customers, including me! And we are frustrated and definitely not happy because of this. Our entire workflow is broken when you can't reliably see changes made to star ratings and have to rely on restarting Lightroom Classic or using the Filter options to see which photos have stars applied (even if the user interface doesn't seem to show that due to this bug).

I fully understand your frustration, but unfortunately it is very relevant whether or not Adobe tech (not necessarily Rikk) can reproduce the problem. If they can't reproduce the problem, how on earth can they fix it?

BTW: I'm getting pretty comfortable with DarkTable while waiting for a fix for this.

If Adobe cannot reproduce your problem, then indeed it is unlikely that they can fix it. It is also unlikely that a possible fix would be something in the Lightroom Classic application, because the application works fine for others (including myself, I have none of the problems you mentioned). It is much more likely that this is caused by something local on your computer. A corrupted catalog, some other process interfering, etc.

Thanks for your reply Johan,

I had previously tried resetting preferences, exporting/importing catalogs, all without success. A total of more than 2 full days of testing. I upgraded to 14.2 again today to try a few more ideas that came to mind based on your message.  To my delight and surprise everything is working again.  Since my previous testing there has been an update to MacOS (15.2 to 15.3.2) and also an update to Adobe Bridge (I don't know if there are any depenancies on Bridge as there are on Camera RAW). I think it's likely one of these updates that has made the difference. Perhaps others with this issue can test this scenario to confirm.

Pleased you've managed to get working again. Ive had a relapse. After I installed the last lightroom upgrade I had everything back working again re tags. Then last night not only did tagging stop i couldnt reconnect files to an alternative harddrive location. Have now downgraded yet again to get a useable application. Massively frustrating.

Here is what i discovered not using keyboard, but the menu. Something isnt updating as it should. Weird it again started suddenly. I had it happen a few month ago and then fixed it and cant remember how? I think I downgraded and upgraded again. between versions

Can this be moved back to "Bugs"?

The reasons listed below make Lr unusable past 14.01.

  • Star ratings in grid view don't update (this main topic)
  • Can't create virtual copies - greyed out
  • Can't edit in othe software (Photoshop etc) - greyed out
  • Keywords don't appear and can't be added

Any one of these issues is a deal breaker but I am experiencing all of them. Possibly more but this is where I gave up.

I tried resetting preferences but that didn't help. 

Actually, after updating  from 14.01 to 14.1.1 to try this, all keywords are missing from all photos.

Perhaps your catalog is corrupt, as you also reported another issue that both Rikk and I cannot reproduce. Did you try a catalog backup?

I think the catalog is OK as everything works normally if I revert to LRC
version 14.01

Ah so I'm not alone. I've struck the same issue. Have installed and uninstalled 14.1.1 twice due to the same rating issue. Would love the improved remove function in the new version but rating info too important for my processing.

Checked and the star issue seemed to start at 14.01 as reinstalled version as same issue. Worked fine when i dropped back to 14.

This same problem exists for Lightroom Classic 14.1.1 on Windows 11 Pro 24H2

Whatever the heck that Adobe has done has really messed up the stars showing in the user interface. Sometimes if I change views, the starts will appear.

This also affects the color ratings as well, e.g. 6 = Red, 7 = Yellow, etc. these are not updating correctly either in the visible user interface, but appear to be saved in the underlying database.

Someone else mentioned keywords. I am not seeing any keyword statistisc on the right-hand side of the Library view. There are keywords there, but they are all showing zeros next to them.

Actually your point re saved in underlying database is right. That was my experience too. Info was there but couldn't see it. I'm on apple mac m1 max sonoma 14.5. Prefer to put up with other adobe defects than lose efficient tagging.

This just happened to me now, been editing last days, rating worked as expected. Now it doesnt and I have to change views or restart LR and will show what I rated. Very annoying!
