Strange behavior "Edit in Photoshop"-settings issue?

Explorer ,
Jul 14, 2019 Jul 14, 2019

When I select "Edit in Photoshop.." I am not prompted to select "Edit copy with LR Adjustments, Edit a Copy, Edit Original".  I have the same behavior with "open as a smart object in Photoshop".  I have the expected behavior with other external editors (e.g. Nik), that is I get the selection prompt.  Further I must have Photoshop already running to properly open the image.  If Photoshop is not running, and I select "Edit n Photoshop " or Open as smart object in Photoshop" only the lower left 1/4 of the image is opened in Photoshop.

I have previously used the "end it in" and "open as " with out any problems.  I tried restarting LR, PS and my computer but I still have the same behavior.

Have I incorrectly set some prefence in LR or PS?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi MIKEGI,

That isn't a great user experience, we're sorry to hear about this as the "Edit in Photoshop" command from Lightroom Classic is not working as expected.

Could you please take a look at the troubleshooting steps mentioned in this article 'Edit In Photoshop' command missing  and let us know if that helps?

Thanks,

Akash

A partial possible answer-

I am not prompted to select "Edit copy with LR Adjustments,

Are you selecting a raw or RGB file to Edit-in Photoshop?

This is normal behavior for raw files (NEF, CR2, etc)!

Only RGB files (JPG, TIF) will give you the dialog with "Edit copy with LR Adjustments, Edit a Copy, Edit Original" prompts.

External editors (e.g. Nik) ask for the File-type you want to open with (JPG,PSD,TIF, the Preferences setting is default.)

But note that the only option available from a raw file is Edit copy with LR Adjustments". "Edit Original" would not be available as NIK doesn't work with raw files.

Sending a JPG or TIF to NIK will give you ALL options (Edit copy with LR Adjustments, Edit a Copy, Edit Original)

only the lower left 1/4 of the image is opened in Photoshop.

Wait for more expert answers for this!

File corruption? Graphics Driver problem?

Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 14.5.1, Photoshop 26.10, ACR 17.5, Lightroom 8.5, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 15.1.1 .

Possibility that you're getting the complete image but only seeing a corner? Try using the hand to drag and/or alt-magnifying glass to reduce size.

Akash

The "Edit in Photoshop" command isn't missing; it isn't working properly.

I tried reinstalling PS; got he same result.

1. Thanks for the reminder about no prompt for RAW files

2. Yes only the lower 1/4 of image is opened in PS: the lower 1/4 of the image is placed in the upper right corner of the canvas

Let’s try another approach as diagnostic, not as workaround, to the PS display problem.

Instead of accomplishing an Edit In Photoshop. Go and accomplish an export, Now as to export to what, an inquiry, what do you have setup for the round trip LR Classic to PS then back to LR Classic ? TIFF?

Accomplish an Export, perhaps to a TIFF file.

In LR, full or 1/4 image ?

Open that TIFF file in Photoshop. Full image or just 1/4 visible?

Also, as a diagnostic, in PS open the RAW file you imported into LR. This will involve the Adobe Camera RAW plug-in that PS uses, as opposed to the Camera RAW internal to LR

Full or just 1/4 image?

Positive result might indicate no fault in ACR nor in PS, failure might indicate one or the other

Oh, in both LR classic and in PS, in the menu, click on Help, click on System Information. In each note the GPU info, copy and paste both values in a response.

Looking to see they match (make/model/driver) And curious to compare driver in system to driver on GPU webpage.

A highly unlikely mismatch could indicate a software problem

To clarify, the issue depends on the initial conditions: Is PS open (running) or not

If PS is already running there is no problem. I can "edit in PS" or "open as smart object in PS" successfully

If PS is NOT already running, the image is not completely opened;  The lower left 1/4 of the image is placed in the upper right corner of the canvas.  This happens if LR export preference for PS is set to TIF or PSD.

The image opens properly in ACR.

From LR Sys Info:

Graphics Processor Info:

DirectX: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 (25.21.14.1917)

From PS Sys Info

glgpu[0].GLName="NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080"

glgpu[0].GLVendor="NVIDIA Corporation"

glgpu[0].GLVendorID=4318

glgpu[0].GLDriverVersion="25.21.14.1917"

It appears to me that for the case when PS is NOT already open/running, that PS noes not open correctly/completely. The Windows blue "spinning circle" blinks next to the cursor (indicating to me that something is not done/churning in the background) and I am not able to access all the PS drop down images (e.g. "windows")

Ah, either not in original post, or (more likely) I missed that bit.

PS not showing all menu items when launched vis Edit in Photoshop (unless PS already running) was an issue earlier. Adobe had workarounds, Adobe had fall backs

And supposedly the bug, and it was a bug, fixed.

Other members with better memory may please correct me. Think it was an issue in PS.

So you have LR CL v8.3.1

PS v20.0.5 20190605.r.83

and what about ACR? (not the Camera RAW in LR CL, but the actual ACR?

Current latest is:

LR CL 8.3.1 check

PS v20.0.5 check (bug was fixed in v 20.0.2)

ACR v11.3

An old workaround was in PS Preferences/General to disable the home screen, might want to play with that

Sounds like some old code is lingering in your computer

You probably need to, dread, contact Adobe

You, know, one odd bit of mystery, that has occurred.

Accomplish an Edit in PS from LR, let it fail. Check in PS for the version. Not running two versions perhaps?

Well I just discovered that this issue has something to do with the settings I had to implement to accommodate my new 4K display.

I set the LR properties as described here:

Lightroom menu bar too large

That is

under compatibilty:

Check "Run this program in compatibility mode>Windows 8"

Check "disable full screen opimization"

change high DPI settings:  Check "override hihg DPI scaling behavior preference by>system"

I went back and reset the settings to the default (no compatibility mode, no disable full screen optimization, no override of high DP scaling behavior by system and..

there was no problem with "edit in PS"

Unfortunately I need a magnifying glass to read my LR screen on my 4K display.

I reset LR properties to the values in the referenced article and set the PS properties to the same values.  Unfortunately, this didn't fix the issue.  That is, with PS not open/running "edit in PS" does not open the image properly in PS.

I have a workaround ( have PS open before using "Edit in PS") but this sounds like a bug.

If you start PS normally, can you look at system info?
